Welsh Football Roundup – January 15th

We had cup and league action to keep us entertained this week across Wales.

Along with the quarter finals of the Adran Trophy, there were pivotal games in the Adran North and Adran South for us to keep our eyes on.

Adran Trophy

We start our roundup at Park Avenue. This weekend we lost Kevin ‘Bones’ Jenkins. Bones was a former coach at Aberystwyth Town, as well as club chairman at Penrhyncoch FC. He was undoubtedly an iconic figure in Aber, and father to Seasiders striker Amy Jenkins.

We would like to send all our love and sympathy to Bones’ family, friends and everyone associated with Aberystwyth Town.

Ahead of their game against Wrexham, members of the Aberystwyth Town development team went round the ground with collection buckets, with all the proceeds going to Hywel Dda Health Charities.

On the pitch, the Seasiders came out on top 2-0. Their first goal was scored by Amy Jenkins, in a moment that was written in the stars. Their second was a powerful effort by Beth Roberts, as Aber reached their second semi-final of the season.

We next go to North Wales. Last weekend in the Adran Premier, TNS hammered Pontypridd United 4-0. This week, the Dragons had an opportunity to make amends, but their hoodoo continued as the Saints ran out 2-0 winners.

As the first half looked destined to end goalless, Isobel Redding popped up with a goal, heading in after a clever knock back from Helen Evans.

The second half could have gone either way with both sides having chances, but TNS finished the job seven minutes from time. Lia Lewis sliding the ball into Emily Ridge, who slotted past Eleanor Brook. The Saints march on into the final four.

Holders Cardiff Met are also in the semis, after a comfortable 6-0 victory over Connah’s Quay Nomads. It was a fast start from the Archers as they went ahead six minutes in. Ellie Preece made good progress down the wing before teeing it up for Robyn Pinder, who stroked the ball home.

Met held a slim one goal lead going into the break, but they stepped up a gear in the second half. Tija Richardson grabbed herself two goals in the space of ten minutes to put Met three up. Preece then powered a ball home to make it four, before Kennesha Nanette put Met in a strong position.

Their best goal was saved till the end, an Evie Griffiths stunner leaving no chance for the keeper. Met looking good as they attempt to retain their crown.

The final quarter final tie takes us to Leckwith, as Cardiff City put on a show, as they romped to a 10-0 win against Llandudno.

Two headers in the opening five minutes, one from Danielle Broadhurst and one from Siobhan Walsh, got the proceedings going. Then there was four goals in the space of five minutes; two for Phoebie Poole, one for Danielle Green and a stunning free kick from Ffion Price had City six up before the 20 minute mark.

A Lily Billingham goal and a second for Walsh meant they were eight up at the break. But credit to Dudno. Their second half performance was an admirable one and they held out the Bluebirds for a while, as well as producing chances for themselves.

However, Poole completed her hat trick with six minutes remaining, before Billingham scored a sumptuous goal to round off the game.

Aberystwyth, TNS, Cardiff Met and Cardiff City are your semi finalists in the Adran Trophy.

Adran North

A solitary game in the Adran North this week, but it was a basement battle between Llanfair United and Airbus. It was Llanfair who came out on top with a 2-0 win.

A first half goal from Harriet Davies and a second half effort from Liann Richards saw Llanfair take all three points.

The result leaves the home side four points above the Wingmakers, who now sit rock bottom of the Adran North.

Adran South

Briton Ferry continue to lead the Adran South, as they ran out 10-1 winners away to Caldicot Town. Lucy Powell scored a wondergoal to get Ferry underway, before a Brooke Llewelyn own goal restored parity.

However, Ferry weren’t going to let the equaliser phase them, as they scored a minute after conceding, Fluer Jenkins scoring after the Caldicot keeper spilled the ball. A second for Jenkins and a second for Powell from the spot, along with one each for Lowri Baker and Meg Kearle had the Ferry 6-1 up at the break.

After the break, Kearle got her second after a well weighted through ball by Powell. Jenkins then became the first Ferry player to score a hat trick in this game to make it 8-1.

Baker scored her second after quick movement in the box, before Kearle secured her hat trick nine minutes from the end. A strong win for the Ferry.

Cascade YC kept the heat up on Briton Ferry as they conducted a late comeback against Pontardawe Town to win 2-1.

After a goalless first half, league top scorer Catryn Cook put Ponty ahead, and they looked good value for their lead, until the final four minutes.

Abbie Davies scored an equaliser, a clever cut back before picking her spot in the top corner. Then in the 90th minute, Annaliese Lewis scored the winner, as she managed to beat the offside trap before siding the ball home.

Cascade and Briton Ferry are still level on points at the top of the Adran South.
