Canton are through to the third round of the Welsh Cup after beating Cambrian & Clydach Vale on penalties.

Chris Dye provided the Libs with a first-half lead with a 42nd-minute effort but then David Allen gave Cambrian a route back into the game with an own goal just two minutes after the restart.

Neither side could find a goal in regulation time and penalties had to sepate the two. Jay Woodford, and Efan Fletcher missed their spot-kicks with 16-year-old Thierry Otu scoring the decisive penalty.

The first half started with Cambrian & Clydach trying to take control of the possession. After five minutes of the match Cambrian thought they were in, but David Allen, the Canton centre back put in a great tackle to thwart the Cambrian striker.

Both teams tried to get a foothold of the game with Cambrian having more of the possession in the early stages of the match. Canton were trying to capitalise from a few loose balls and play the ball over the top of the defence to their striker Andre Philipps who had a few efforts on goal, but none that really tested the keeper.

Cambrian tested Susso Sulimane with a free kick on the 34-minute mark, but the goalkeeper did well to tip the ball over the bar. On the other end, Cian Hales intercepted the ball and was one-on-one with the keeper, but he slotted his effort just past the post.

After 42 minutes, Christopher Dye opened the scoring for Canton with an excellent chip over Morgan Davies in goal.

Cambrian & Clydach couldn’t have asked for a better start to the second half, as they equalised after 48 minutes through an own goal from David Allen. Cambrian & Clydach had their fair share of possession in the second half, but they couldn’t create any clear-cut chances.

Canton had a great opportunity to win the game in normal time when the ball fell to Kyle Campbell just yards out from the goal, but he couldn’t direct the shot on target. That meant, that the game would go to penalties…

Jay Woodford stepped up first for Cambrian & Clydach but his penalty was saved by Susso Suleimane. Tyrrell Webbe then scored Canton’s first penalty, and when the score in the penalty shoot-out was 3-3, up stepped 16-year-old Thierry Ebube Otu. He calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to secure their place in the third round of the JD Welsh Cup.
