Tom Tweedy has become a free agent after being released by recently relegated Premier League side Burnley.
The 21-year-old forward departs Turf Moor after several years within Burnley’s system, where he gained valuable experience, continuing his development as a bright young attacking prospect. The Lancashire club confirmed his departure after publishing their retained list.
Tweedy joined Burnley from Penybont for a respectable fee while the Clarets were still competing in the EFL Championship back in 2023. The forward initially signed an 18-month deal at the age of 18, before later earning an extension to his stay at Turf Moor.
Time at Penybont
Tweedy previously came through at Penybont, where he made 26 appearances across all competitions during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.
His standout moment came with a memorable goal against Caernarfon Town, which ultimately remained his only senior strike for the club. He also registered an assist for Rhys Griffiths’ men, and had his blessing when his departure was confirmed.
Development at Burnley and Darlington loan
After leaving Penybont, Tweedy joined Burnley’s setup, spending several years developing within the club’s academy and senior environment.
During this time, he continued to gain experience as a young forward within a Premier League-level structure.
Tweedy is a two-time Wales Under-21 international, having earned both caps under Matty Jones in March 2025. He started against Andorra before coming off the bench in the subsequent match against Sweden.
More recently, Tweedy spent time on loan with Darlington in the National League North, having spent a bit of time with Morecambe.
He managed to get first-team football, racking up 20 straight starts for Darlo, registering three assists during his spell, having been deployed as a left wing-back.
What Next?
With his release now confirmed, Tweedy will be seeking the next step in his career as he looks to secure regular first-team football.
Given his experience across Welsh senior football, international youth level, and development within a Premier League club environment, he is expected to attract interest as he explores his next move.
No interest in Tweedy has been reported yet, but with Penybont preparing for the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds and the forward now possessing greater experience, a return to the club could represent a shrewd move for both parties.
Penybont have already demonstrated their ability to develop young talent, with the progress of players such as James Crole and Gabe Kircough leading to January moves to Newport County and Forest Green Rovers, respectively. That track record could make the Bryntirion outfit an attractive option as Tweedy considers the next stage of his career.
