Cymru North: Former Newcastle United striker makes non-league switch, and ex-Wrexham midfielder joins Brickfield

With the new Cymru North season fast approaching, clubs across the division have wasted little time reshaping their squads ahead of what promises to be another competitive campaign.

Several sides have already been active in the transfer market, with a mixture of experienced Cymru Premier and Cymru North players, promising young talents and familiar faces returning to former clubs. Teams are laying down early markers as they look to strengthen their squads and improve on last season’s performances.

Brickfield Rangers have been among the busiest clubs so far, completing a five-player recruitment drive, while Gresford Athletic have begun a major rebuild following changes both on and off the pitch. Denbigh Town and Guilsfield have also added valuable experience to their squads, while Porthmadog have made a statement of intent with seven new arrivals.

There has also been movement beyond the Cymru pyramid, with several players taking on new challenges. Former Bala Town striker Cameron Ferguson has secured a move into the English non-league system, while Newtown forward Iwan Roberts has joined Nantwich Town after a spell in Wales.

As preparations continue for the 2026/27 campaign, clubs across Cymru North are strengthening in key areas, adding depth and experience while giving supporters plenty to discuss ahead of the opening fixtures.

Brickfield Rangers Complete Five-Man Recruitment Drive

Brickfield Rangers have made an early statement of intent by completing a major recruitment drive, bringing in five new arrivals ahead of the new season.

Robbie Evans, Kiran Russell, Dom Doherty, Carl Jones and Sam Flory have all signed for the club, with the majority arriving from clubs within the Welsh football pyramid.

The club completed a double swoop from league rivals Guilsfield, bringing in forward Sam Flory and defender Kiran Russell. Goalkeeper Carl Jones arrives from Ardal North West champions Bangor City, while experienced midfielder Robbie Evans joins from Newtown. Dom Doherty also returns to Clywedog Park after a spell away from football.

Flory enjoyed an impressive campaign with Guilsfield last season, scoring nine goals and providing three assists in 26 league appearances, while also adding five more goals across cup competitions.

Centre-back Russell returns to Brickfield after joining Guilsfield in January. During his previous spell with the club, he made 12 appearances and helped secure two league clean sheets.

Midfielder Doherty was part of the Brickfield side that won the Ardal North East title after joining midway through the campaign from Mold Alexandra. He brings valuable experience, having already made 45 appearances at second-tier level.

Evans adds further experience to the squad following three seasons with Newtown. The 31-year-old has previously represented Wrexham, Billericay Town, Curzon Ashton and AFC Telford United, while making 93 appearances for Newtown, scoring twice and assisting twice. He also has 228 appearances across the National League and National League North.

Goalkeeper Jones arrives after a standout season as Bangor City’s first-choice stopper, making 43 appearances in all competitions and helping the club lift the Ardal North League Cup and Amateur Trophy.

Cameron Ferguson Makes Southport Move

Former Bala Town striker Cameron Ferguson has secured a move to National League North side Southport following his departure from Maes Tegid.

The 23-year-old, who is the son of Everton legend Duncan Ferguson, leaves Welsh football after spells with Connah’s Quay Nomads, Flint Town United and Bala Town, making 26 appearances across the three clubs.

Ferguson also spent time in the academy setup at Newcastle United, representing the club’s Under-21 side before moving into senior football.

Bala had initially announced that Ferguson would remain with the club for the 2026/27 campaign, but that decision was later reversed, allowing the forward to pursue a new challenge.

Despite Bala’s relegation from the Cymru Premier, Ferguson enjoyed an encouraging spell with the Lakesiders, registering a goal and three assists in his opening three matches before scoring in three consecutive games towards the end of the season as Bala fought to retain their top-flight status.

His final appearance came in the defeat to Briton Ferry on the last day of the campaign, a result which confirmed Bala’s relegation.

Denbigh Town Add Osian Davies

Denbigh Town have continued their summer recruitment with the signing of midfielder Osian Davies from Cymru North rivals Ruthin Town.

Davies arrives at Central Park after establishing himself as a consistent performer in midfield during his time with Ruthin and becomes the eighth addition to Dewi Llion’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

The move also sees Davies return to Denbigh for the first time since leaving the club as a teenager.

Gresford Athletic Begin Squad Rebuild

Gresford Athletic have moved quickly to rebuild their squad following a summer of change at Clappers Lane.

After manager Dave Evans departed for Buckley Town, Anthony Weaver has taken charge and wasted no time strengthening his squad, completing six new signings.

Among the arrivals are Flint Mountain duo Dom Maher and Adam Newbold, while Ryley Berry joins from Colwyn Bay and Titi Konstantin arrives from The New Saints.

Luke Griffin and Connor Whelan complete the recruitment drive, joining from Llay Welfare and Rhydymwyn respectively.

Guilsfield Welcome Seven New Arrivals

Guilsfield have strengthened ahead of the new season by confirming seven additions, including the return of former Newtown goalkeeper Mike Jones.

Jones previously represented Guilsfield before moving elsewhere and now returns alongside Joe Haycock from Berriew, Billy Clarke from Llanrhaeadr, Ellis Turner from Telford Town, Alex Buxton from Gresford, Harvey Jones from Newtown and Jack Jones from Llanfair United.

The signing of Turner marks another familiar face returning to the club, with the midfielder having previously played for Guilsfield after coming through The New Saints academy.

Iwan Roberts Joins Nantwich Town

Newtown forward Iwan Roberts has swapped the Welsh pyramid for English non-league football after signing for Nantwich Town.

The 21-year-old leaves Latham Park after half a season with the Robins, making 11 appearances following his move from Gresford Athletic.

Roberts enjoyed an impressive spell with Gresford, scoring seven goals and providing four assists in 18 matches before moving to Newtown. He has also previously featured for Bala Town and Denbigh Town.

Porthmadog Strengthen With Seven Signings

Porthmadog have made a strong statement ahead of the new Cymru North season by confirming seven new arrivals.

Math Jones, Steffan Alford, Sam Thomas, Jac Humphreys, Luke Baum and Dylan Summers-Jones have all joined the Traeth club as they look to build a squad capable of competing in the 2026/27 campaign.

The headline signing is forward Dylan Summers-Jones, who arrives after a prolific season with Bangor City. He scored 10 goals and provided four assists in 22 league appearances, while also playing a key role in Bangor’s memorable Welsh Cup run to the semi-finals.

Goalkeeper Robbie Williams has also joined from Gresford Athletic after keeping seven clean sheets in 29 appearances last season and nearing 150 appearances at this level.
