Welsh football club make managerial change after 93 days
Welsh football club Cwmbran Town have changed manager after just 93 days, with former boss Brandon Simpson replaced by club legend Sean Wharton.
Simpson was appointed in June but endured a difficult start to the campaign, with Cwmbran suffering four consecutive defeats in the Ardal South East.
The Crows are currently bottom of the division, with their only victories under Simpson coming in cup competitions.
They beat West End in the Welsh Cup before progressing against New Inn on penalties in the Ardal South League Cup.
Welsh football Cwmbran turn to club legend
Wharton, 57, now returns to the club where he played a major role in its history.
He was a key member of the Cwmbran Town side which won the Cymru Premier title in 1992, becoming the first team to win the inaugural Welsh top flight.
Wharton made 160 appearances for the Crows and was also part of the side which represented the club in Europe for the first time, against Cork City in 1993.
He previously managed Cwmbran Town between 2005 and 2007, guiding the club to the Gwent Senior Cup in the 2005/06 season.
Since then, Wharton has also managed Goytre, Abergavenny Town and Aberbargoed Buds.
Chairman’s message to Simpson and Wharton
Cwmbran chairman Dan O’Connell thanked Simpson for his contribution before welcoming Wharton back to the club.
“We would like to thank Brandon for his professionalism and work ethic. He is a very talented coach and an exceptional person, and we hope to see him back at the club at some point in the future. Sean, of course, needs little introduction, a Crows legend on and off the pitch, and one of the best managers in Welsh football. We are delighted to have him back leading our great club – welcome home, Sean.”
Wharton said he was proud to return to a club with which he has a long association.
“I feel privileged to be taking the First Team Manager role at a club that’s very close to my heart. I know a lot of the current squad and can’t wait to get started.”
Lliswerry next for new manager
His first match in charge comes tomorrow, when Cwmbran travel to fellow early strugglers Lliswerry in the Ardal South East.
It will be Wharton’s first opportunity to begin his second spell as Cwmbran Town manager as the club looks to improve its position at the bottom of the division.
Cwmbran Town finished second in the Ardal South East last season, missing out on the title to Caerphilly Athletic by just one point.
They also narrowly tasted defeat against Cymru North side Rhyl 1879 in the Welsh Cup, underlining the progress made by the club last campaign.
But fortunes have been very different this season.
The club made an ambitious signing by bringing in former Swansea City striker Lee Trundle, although new manager Sean Wharton will have to do without him for a spell after the forward suffered an injury which required surgery.
