Wrexham Women have continued their impressive summer recruitment by signing Aston Villa defender Lydia Sallaway on loan ahead of next week’s UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
The Red Dragons are preparing for one of the biggest matches in the club’s history as they host Armenian champions FC Pyunik at the Racecourse Ground on Wednesday, July 22 (7pm BST).
Wrexham gearing up for European challenge
Wrexham will face FC Pyunik in the opening qualifying round, while Northern Irish champions Glentoran take on Latvian side Riga FC Women earlier in the day.
Regardless of the result against Pyunik, Wrexham are guaranteed to play two matches during the mini-tournament. Victory would see them progress to the qualifying final, while defeat would mean a third-place play-off against the loser of the other semi-final.
Lydia Sallaway becomes latest summer addition
Head coach Jenny Sugarman has been busy strengthening her squad ahead of the new campaign, and Sallaway becomes another statement signing for the Welsh side.
The 18-year-old arrives alongside Bella Reidford, who was confirmed as a Wrexham player just a day earlier following her move from Stoke City.
Lucy Farrell, Natasha Thomas and Mikayla Cook are also among Wrexham’s summer arrivals, with the trio already starting to develop a strong understanding alongside Reidford during the club’s pre-season training camp in Cork.
Sallaway arrives after spending the second half of last season on loan at Glasgow City, where she gained valuable senior experience in the Scottish Women’s Premier League.
Head Coach Jenny Sugarman added: “Lydia is a young player with huge potential and now she needs the opportunity to show herself at senior level.
“She’s a very good technician, loves defending, is keen to learn, and is ready to compete.
“I want to thank Aston Villa for working with us on this loan deal. We believe our environment is one that will challenge and support Lydia on the next steps in her development.”
Rising star with Women’s Super League experience
A product of Aston Villa’s academy, Sallaway signed her first professional contract with the Women’s Super League club in 2025.
She made her senior debut for Villa in December 2023 at just 16 years old, featuring against Durham in the Women’s League Cup, before making her Women’s Super League debut against Manchester United at Villa Park in 2025.
The young defender will now gain further first-team experience with Wrexham, including the opportunity to play in European competition.
Sallaway: “I’m excited for the new season”
Speaking to the club’s official website after completing her move, Sallaway said she was impressed by the club’s ambition and direction.
“I’ve heard great things about this club and, being around the girls for a short amount of time, I’m just really excited for the new season to get started.
“I’ve seen the direction which this club is heading towards and there is such a positive feeling around the place. I’m looking forward to my own personal development here, as well as seeing this team develop.”
Trophy-winning experience despite her young age
Although still only 18, Sallaway already has silverware to her name.
She was part of the Glasgow City squad that won the Sky Sports Cup in March and made an immediate impression after arriving on loan, featuring in the semi-final victory over Hibernian.
Internationally, she has represented England at youth level from Under-16 through to Under-19.
“I can’t wait to meet the fans”
Sallaway believes she can make a strong contribution to Wrexham’s defence and is eager to connect with the club’s supporters.
“I feel like I can bring good strength along the back line to this team. I’m really excited to get to know everyone properly, build our chemistry, and I do feel that we can go really far this season, just like the team did last season.
“I can’t wait to meet the fans. I’ve heard that they are so passionate about the squad and the town, which is really exciting. I’m looking forward to meeting them, but also for them to get to know me as a player and a person.”
