Wrexham Women have been dealt a major blow after star striker Katie Barker suffered a serious knee injury which will rule her out for the remainder of the campaign.

The 25-year-old has been diagnosed with a rupture of her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), with the club confirming the news following an assessment by their medical team.

Barker was forced off in the 58th minute of Wrexham’s emphatic 7-0 victory over Cardiff Met on October 18. She subsequently missed the Red Dragons’ win against Barry Town United, with the severity of her injury now confirmed.

In a statement, the club said: “Following assessment by the Club’s medical team, we can confirm that Katie Barker has sustained a rupture of her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

“Katie will see a specialist in the coming days and begin her rehabilitation under the care of the Club.

“We’re all with you KB.”

Barker’s devastating injury is a huge setback for Wrexham

The news represents a significant setback for Wrexham, with Barker having enjoyed an outstanding start to the season.

The forward has scored 11 goals and provided one assist in just seven appearances across all competitions this term, establishing herself as one of the key figures in the Red Dragons’ attacking line.

Her absence will be keenly felt as Wrexham look to maintain their challenge at the top of the Adran Premier, particularly given the prolific form she has shown since arriving at the club.

Record-breaking campaign saw Barker win two major awards

Barker was instrumental in Wrexham’s success last season, producing remarkable numbers in front of goal.

She finished the league campaign with 25 goals and seven assists, becoming the first player in Adran Premier history to score 20 or more goals in a single league season.

She also played a key role in helping the Red Dragons lift their first Adran Trophy, contributing a further two goals and four assists in the competition.

Her performances were recognised with two individual honours, as she collected both the Wrexham Women’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards.

Barker signed a contract with Wrexham two years ago which runs until the end of the 2026/27 campaign, meaning the club will continue to have the striker under contract as she works towards her recovery.

Wrexham maintain title advantage despite striker’s absence

Despite losing their star forward, Wrexham have continued to pick up important results on the pitch.

The Red Dragons recorded a convincing 4-0 victory over Briton Ferry Llansawel in their latest outing, with Faye Knox scoring twice.

Lili Mai Jones and Maria Francis-Jones also found the net as Wrexham secured all three points without Barker leading the line.

The result leaves Wrexham two points clear at the top of the Adran Premier table, with closest challengers The New Saints dropping points after being held to a draw by Barry Town United.

While Barker’s injury is an undeniable setback, Wrexham will be determined to maintain their momentum in the title race as the striker begins what is likely to be a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Everyone at the club will now be hoping for a successful recovery for one of their most important players.
