Risca United boss Simon Berry has said that his side must pick up maximum points against today’s opponents Caldicot Town and Monmouth Town, if they are to remain in the division.
Today’s clash between Risca and Caldicot could be seen as a relegation six pointer, with both sides at the bottom of the table.
“We need to finish the season strong and have earmarked the games against Caldicot and Monmouth where we need to pick up maximum points.
The effort and commitment from the players has been excellent and with an extra bit of luck we feel we can pick up some wins in our final games.”
Fortunately for Risca, Berry will have a full squad to choose from and has opted not to play the remainder of the season despite naming himself as a substitute in recent matches.
“We will have a full squad to choose from for this weekends fixture against Caldicot. I have no plans to play myself in the remaining games I was named as a substitute more recently due to injuries and suspensions but now have a full squad available.
Berry says he won’t change his message to his players before the match as he feels content with the performances from his players the last few games.
“It’s a big game for both sides and it’s massively important we can get the win and 3 points to take us off the bottom. The message to my players has been the same for the last 5 or 6 games, which it is to keep playing the same way. We feel we have been very unlucky in previous games and have more than matched our opposition and should have picked up more points.”
Even if the Cuckoos did go down, Berry feels that this would help the players prepare for next season, due to the youthfulness of the squad.
“The side is very young but I feel they have stepped up recently and this experience will benefit them now and in the future.”
