Vanarama National League North side Chester have identified Citizens boss Kevin Nicholson as a key candidate for the current vacancy.
In his debut season with the club, the former Cardiff City U23s coach took the Citizens to their highest league finish in two years, as well as a Welsh Cup semi-final.
The club were recently knocked back by former Leeds United, Rotherham United and now Doncaster Rovers Belles manager Neil Redfearn.
“We decided on our preferred candidate and there has been an offer of a financial package, what we consider to be our best offer, but we are yet to come to a financial agreement.” said Club Director Andrew Morris when speaking to the Chester Standard.
“As a result, we’ve had to come up with different plans, B, C and D if you like. There needs to be an option as a back-up plan.
In the report by the Chester Standard, Nicholson is considered alongside former Mansfield boss Adam Murray, Craig Harrison and Ian Sharps. Nicholson is considered to be one of the key options, after the initial interview stage.
The interview process however will be extended, as the club will be accepting late applications as they identify their long term successor to Marcus Bignot, who was unable to save the club from relegation to the sixth tier of English football.
“We’ve got to be proactive in seeking a new manager but what we will not do is head hunt someone from another club.
“The other names we are talking to, they are stellar names. I can assure the supporters we’re being prudent. We’ll be talking with the interested parties over the next couple of days.” said Morris.
As it stands, Nicholson’s current club Bangor City will be playing in the Cymru Alliance next season after failing the FAW Tier One Domestic Licence, however the club have lodged an official appeal to overturn the decision.
