WFL Preview: The Amman Valley Derby, Baah returns to Rhiw’r Ddar

The Amman Valley heads this week’s Welsh Football League action, as Cwmamman United host Ammanford.

It’s the first time the two sides will meet in the second tier of Welsh football, after Ammanford’s promotion last season.

Ammanford manager Gruff Harrison began his career with Cwmamman United as a goalkeeper.

Ammanford have yet to win this season and were hammered by Cambrian & Clydach in the League Cup last weekend.

Cwmamman have won once this season.

Goytre v Cambrian & Clydach Vale

Goytre welcome Cambrian to Plough Road this Saturday, where they’ve recorded one victory.

The Gwent Club were stunned when Ton Pentre visited, as the lesser fancied Bulldogs took all three points.

Sean Wharton will be hopeful of getting his side back to winning ways.

The Bulldogs have yet to win on the road this season, having played just one game away from their 3G home.

Goytre United v Pontypridd Town

The Dragons are still in search of their first point in Division One this season, suffering three straight league defeats, including a crushing 10-1 defeat to promotion hopefuls Haverfordwest County.

Goytre United have suffered just one defeat and beat Taffs Well twice in the space of two weeks, after beating them in both League and Cup action.

Haverfordwest County v Afan Lido

Haverfordwest County look to continue their 100% start in the league when they host Afan Lido.

The Bluebirds survived a cup scare, having initially trailed Bridgend Street, but bounced back by winning 5-4 in an entertaining game. It was the first game of Wayne Jones’ return to the Bridge Meadow, following Sean Cresser’s departure.

Afan Lido wasn’t so lucky though in the Cup and a youthful Lido side lost to Division Three outfit Pontyclun.

Llantwit Major v Port Talbot Town

Originally scheduled to be played at Victoria Road, this late venue change now means Major will play at their Frampton Lane home.

That is news to the ears of manager Karl Lewis. All of Major’s three points this season have come at home.

The Steelmen, however, are unbeaten so far this season, under manager Mark Pike who has made a youthful Port Talbot team.

Llantwit Major forward Anthony Rawlings previously played for Port Talbot Town.

Penybont v Ton Pentre

The two sides meet for the second time in three weeks, having recently met in the Nathaniel MG Cup.

The fixture was played at the KYMCO Stadium, with the Bulldogs actually considered as the home team, as pitch renovations continued at Ynys Park.

Penybont ran out 3-1 winners that evening, despite Leon Jacka opening the scoring for Kevin Richard’s men.

Cullen Kinsella, Marcus Griffiths and new boy James Dixon gave Rhys Griffiths’ men victory that night.

Ton Pentre celebrated their first league win of the season before the Cup break, beating Goytre away. Penybont beat Pontypridd Town at home last time out.

Taffs Well v Cwmbran Celtic

Nana Baah returns to Rhiw Ddar just a month after he was surprisingly relieved of his duties as joint manager.

The 2014/2015 Division One title winner is now assistant manager at Cwmbran Celtic, working under Lee Challenger.

Adrian Needs is the remaining sole manager, following Lee Bridgeman’s departure from the club.

Needs is still in search of his first win as Wellmen boss.

The fixture list has been reduced, with a number of Division Two and a majority of Division Three sides in FAW Trophy action.

Division Two

Gareth Wilmott hopes to keep up his sides good form when they welcome bottom side Aberdare Town this weekend.

Aberdare Town are rock bottom of the division so far, suffering 13-0 and 8-1 defeats, losing five straight league games.

AFC Llwydcoed host Abergavenny Town, Caerau Ely play Risca United at Cwrt-yr-Ala Road, Bridgend Street continue on their travels to Caldicot Town and Monmouth Town hope to beat lowly Dinas Powys.
