STM Sports AFC goal-scorers Calum Bateman and Lamin Conteh both expressed delight in their 4-2 victory over Caerau Ely.
Saturday’s win saw STM move into third in the table on 51 points, two points, and positions behind Caldicot Town.
Conteh opened the scoring with a well taken free kick which he admits he works on every week before getting a second with a well-taken finish towards the end of the game.
“I keep practicing in training. Luckily today that ball I hit went top corner. I’m happy with it.”
“They put the ball behind the defender so I had to take my chance, go over the goalkeeper and tap it in.” He said. “It was a great goal. I love it.”
As (long) as the ball hit the net that’s most important, we got the three points which will help us to go and progress.
“This win today will help us, make a big gap and other teams which is great.”
Bateman who started the game on the bench with the scores at 1-1 turned the game around with two goals in twenty-seven minutes.
“The one to go 2-1 was very important, it gave us the upper hand and I think our third to go 3-1 was a great team goal.”
“Whenever you are on the bench you’ve got to have the right mindset and you got to get your head out of the sand at the end of the day, come on, make a difference and thankfully it was one of those days, I’ve done it.”
“Watching from the side I thought we were very organized and I think should have put it to bed first half, bit shakey as you can understand. It’s a big game for both teams but yeah we came out trumps in the end.”
Both strikers praised each other, after the game.
“Lamin, he’s dynamite,” Bateman said. “No defender in this league, the league below and higher than us, division one no one wants to touch him and no one will get near him. He’s lightning quick and he’s just scary. I wouldn’t want to defend him.”
He’s (Callum) a great player, I love to play with him. Whenever we play he gives me support in the front. To play with him is great. Top class player he came of the bench, made the scores different. It’s great to have him in the team.
With eight games to go of the season, both forwards were keen to point out that they could get promotion starting with Bridgend Street on Wednesday 17th April.
“We keep performing we’ve got no problem to win that games,” Conteh said. The game (against Bridgend) is more important, they are a strong team we did it at home so hopefully, we can do it away as well.”
“As far as we can play the way we play at home we’ve got no problem to win away games.”
“It’s important to win away it’s not easy to go away and win games. We have no trouble.”
“I think we’ve proved it all year round, doesn’t matter where we go.” Bateman added. “We are strong enough to beat any team in this league and today we proved it.”
“Just go for the title, the silverware. Let’s push on now.”
