Former Shrewsbury duo Flint and Hughes join Welsh Premier clubs

Former Shrewsbury Town duo George Hughes and Niall Flint have joined the Welsh Premier League.

George Hughes has joined new boys Airbus UK Broughton whilst Niall Flint has joined Newtown, alongside Ian Sheridan.

Central midfielder Hughes, was recently released from his contract from the Football League club.

He was the captain of the Under-18s, before signing his first professional deal in 2017. He Hughes spent a total of 12 years with Shrewsbury Town.

Upon signing for the Wingmakers, Hughes tweeted: “I’m delighted to have signed now, I can’t wait for the season to start.”

Hughes already as experience in playing in the Welsh Premier League. He played a total of 13 times for Newtown last season, scoring one goal. 

The youngster also played for Colwyn Bay, Clitheroe and Stalybridge Celtic. 

Flint is Newtown’s second signing after they confirmed the signing of George Harry yesterday.

The attacking midfielder was with Shrewsbury from 2013 to 2015, before joining Shropshire side AFC Telford. He has since played for Scarborough Athletic and Matlock.

A statement from Newtown said: “we wish Flint the best of luck at Latham Park and we look forward to witnessing the midfielder play in Newtown colors.”

Joining him at Latham Park is Bala Town legend Ian Sheridan. Sheridan spent a total of seven years at Maes Tegid, scoring their first European goal.

Manager Chris Hughes said: “ I’m delighted to add these three players to our squad for this season. George, Niall and Ian will add quality to our squad and we look forward to working with them.”
