Bolton Wanderers are in pole position to land the free transfer signing of Newport County AFC midfielder Josh Sheehan.
The midfielder, who wasn’t named in Rob Page’s 26-man squad for EURO 2020, looks set to make the University of Bolton Stadium his new home.
According to the Football Insider, the 26-year-old is having a medical with the Trotters today after reaching an agreement on a contract. Bolton Wanderers however refused to comment on any links to Sheehan when asked by Bolton News.
Yesterday, he was named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year for his performances over the course of the 2020/21 season.
Sheehan missed just three league fixtures for the Exiles, scoring three times and assisting on four occasions. The Pembrey-born player also played in both their Carabao and FA Cup runs.
His performances saw him earn a call-up to the Wales squad last year, where he featured against the USA. He earned a second call-up and played against Mexico in March.
With a departure from Rodney Parade likely, he leaves the club in which he first had a loan spell at in 2016, accumulating 25 appearances.
He later joined Newport on a permanent transfer, spending four seasons with the Gwent club, making 164 outings under Michael Flynn.
As well as the possible addition of Sheehan, Bolton are also interested in bringing back Declan John after spending the second half of the season under Ian Evatt.
John was recently released by Swansea City and is available on a free transfer.
Bolton already have Welshmen Gethin Jones, Lloyd Isgrove and MJ Williams.
