Connah’s Quay Nomads and Flint Town United to consider groundshare

Connah’s Quay and Flint Town United are considering the idea of a possible groundshare.

The Nomads are considering moving to Flint Town United’s Cae-y-Castell, with the hope of necessary ground improvements which would allow it to host European fixtures.

Flint Town United’s ground already has the FAW Domestic Licence, which would allow it to stage Welsh Premier League games this season.

Despite a majority of teams in the Welsh Premier League having synthetic pitches, the playing surface would still remain as a grass pitch.

The Nomads currently play at Deeside Stadium, which is 3.2 miles from Cae-y-Castell.

They say that the running track makes it difficult to create a successful match-day atmosphere and experience.

A statement released on the official website said: “The Club has undertaken a site options appraisal and looked at a number of grounds in North East Wales to explore the potential for an effective ground share.

“With the work that has already taken place at Cae-y-Castell, Flint Town Utd FC has also secured the FAW Domestic License so the ground can already be used for Welsh Premier League fixtures.

“Both Clubs have a very positive attitude towards a ground share arrangement at Cae-y-Castell. Such a proposal is also welcomed by officers of the FAW who support not only the potential to create a better stadium, but also the anticipated improvement to the financial position of both clubs.

“Connah’s Quay Nomads FC, who currently play at the Deeside Stadium, have been investigating options for a future ground share and move away from their current facility.

“This has been motivated partly by the lack of a long-term security of tenure leading to uncertainty about the Club’s future, but also disappointing levels of spectator support – recognition that the presence of a running track makes it more difficult to create a successful match-day atmosphere and experience.”

In 2009, the two clubs considered a possible merger and were going to create a club named ‘Gap Flint Nomads’ where their home games would have been played at Flint’s Cae-y-Castell.

Connah’s Quay have yet to announce the venue that they’ll be playing at for their Europa League qualifier. They find out their opponents next week.
