Penybont’s Keenan Patten found the net as his Wales under-19 side dispatched Poland 3-0 at Rodney Parade in European Championship qualifying.

The midfielder – who scored Bont’s first goal in the 2-1 win against Airbus UK Broughton on Saturday – netted Wales’ third in a comprehensive win in Newport.

Joe Adams and Sam Pearson, who play their club football for Brentford and Bristol City, also got on the scoresheet as Wales beat a Poland side who are seeded one place higher than them in Group 5.

Russia and Kosovo’s 1-1 draw at Leckwith Stadium in Cardiff ensured the Dragons finished Matchday 1 first in the group, with the top two sides qualifying for the Elite Round.

Edwards’ side were two goals to the good at the break. Adams opened the scoring when he met Iestyn Hughes’ cross from the right, burying his shot into the bottom right corner.

The hosts doubled their lead just 14 minutes later, as Adams turned provider to put the ball on a plate for Pearson to head in from just outside the five-yard box.

Edwards brought Harry Pinchard, the Cardiff City midfielder, on at half-time to replace Isaak Davies.

Wales put themselves in a commanding position seven minutes into the second-half.

A move, which started with goalkeeper Lewis Webb, saw the team play out from the back before a ball over the top put Hughes into space, he exchanged passes with Pinchard before squaring to an unmarked Patten, who made no mistake to cap off a wonderful display of free-flowing football.

Wales are next in action when they face Russia at Dragon Park in Newport on Saturday, before returning to Rodney Parade to take on Kosovo next Tuesday.
