Former Bangor City manager Ian Dawes will take temporary charge of Tranmere Rovers.

Dawes will take over from Keith Hill and will lead Tranmere against Morecambe in the League Two play-offs.

Tranmere broke the news on the 11th May in a statement issued on their web site. Chairman Mark Palios stating,

“Despite success achieved on the pitch in the form of securing a place in the Play-Offs and reaching the Papa John’s Trophy final, in the Play-Offs an entire season gets distilled into two or three games.

“I have to do what I think gives us the best chance of achieving promotion in those games and I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that means making the change before the semi-finals begin.”

Dawes 37, was caretaker manager at Tranmere from 1st November 2020 to 22nd November 2020. He will take over and try to take the club into League One. If they were to win in the semi finals they could face Newport County in the final. If County are able to overcome Forest Green Rovers.

In May 2013 Dawes took his first managerial role at Maltese club Floriana. After he spent time as a coach at Shrewsbury Town before taking the manager role at Bangor City.

After taking over at Bangor in November 2016, Dawes was gone within four months. He was sacked by Bangor after he was unable to earn a place on the pro licence course. The FAW’s club Licensing criteria required the head coach/manager to have or be in the process of gaining a UEFA Pro licence. North Wales Live reported at the time a club statement,

“Bangor City FC has decided to relieve Ian Dawes of his duties as First Team Manager forthwith due to the inability to gain his acceptance on the current Pro Licence course in accordance with UEFA club licensing criteria.”

He came to Tranmere in following Keith Hill’s appointment in November 2020 as assistant manager.
