Ynysygerwn 2-0 AFC Porth: Goal and assist for bright spark Rhys Brewer

Seventeen-year-old Rhys Brewer helped Ynysygerwn claim their first points of the season as they defeated AFC Porth 2-0 at Llandarcy in the Ardal Leagues.

Making an impact after his introduction in the 60th minute, Brewer broke the deadlock and also can lay acclaim an assist to Daniel Lewis’ second goal.

For Porth, who were still without a number of key players this evening due to player registration issues, they suffer their second consecutive defeat.

The game started slow for both clubs with both teams failing to find a great through ball chance or clear cut chances as both teams couldn’t hit the target.

Despite the lack of chances, Ynysygerwn were the better team and should have taken the lead. Bradley Crooks used his lightning pace to find James Newell who forced Tomos Bodger into a fantastic save.

Ten minutes before the break, Dean Evans found Newell in the box but the full-back fired over the bar.

A rare chance for Porth, saw Jaymie Wearn create space for himself on the flank and he sent his snap shot just wide of the post.

Another chance was presented to the home team as the creative Jake Waites found Newell once more but he was again denied by the goalkeeper who stood tall.

Having gone close in the first quarter, Crook from eight yards out shout over the bar in an unfortunate effort.

Brewer and Lewis were introduced on the hour mark as the home side looked to change things up to challenge the well organised Black Dragons.

The game had its first goal with Nicholas Maggs’ inspired substitution paying off as the fearless Brewer made his mark. Excellent play down the right-hand side from Jake Waites saw him put a brilliant through ball to Brewer who blasted his shot past the goalkeeper.

Porth tried their best to get an equaliser but just couldn’t get into the groove with them just missing out on with an effort chalked out for offside.

Instead of a leveller, there would be a second for Ynysygerwn to ensure one team would be off the mark as Brewer turned provider this time.

Winning the ball on the halfway line, he drove forward to edge of the opposition box, found fellow sub Lewis, whose fired effort deflected into the bottom right-hand corner to squeeze past Bodger and ensure victory.

Ynysygerwyn’s Nicholas Maggs said: “It was a great game today. The subs changed the game today and it was a great goal from Rhys.

“I’ve got huge compliments to him, he has been with since he was 12-years-old, he’s a local boy and it is great to see our club is growing through the ranks.”

Ynysygerwn’s Jake Waites said:

“We played well today, we just could not break them down but eventually got there with a great goal from Rhys. We played better today compared to last week but happy to get the win.”

Ynysygerwn’s Rhys Brewer said:

“I really enjoyed my goal today, I am very happy to do my part for the club. It is nice to get an assist for the second though and perhaps I should claim it!”

AFC Porth’s Kevin Richards said:
“We’re missing a few players today we have a few suspensions and a few away this time of the season but I am happy with tonight’s performance compared to last week.

“We are getting better should have possibly been ahead but was offside. We’re gelling as a team we will be alright once we get our full team back.”
