Wrexham AFC 6-0 CPD Pwllheli: Rosie Hughes scores hat-trick in rampant win

Wrexham AFC Women kicked off their Adran North league campaign with a resounding 6-0 win over CPD Pwllheli Woman.

The hosts, backed by a decent following, showed a ruthless 2nd half streak in front of goal to really take the game away from Pwllheli after leading 1-0 at the break.

Rosie Hughes bagged a hattrick, Rebecca Pritchard with a double, and Lucy Scott for the electric hosts who will be delighted with their showing.

Wrexham had a great chance to open the scoring within a minute when the energetic Rebecca Pritchard found herself through on goal but Pwllheli goalkeeper Mario Julio pulled off a good save.

From then on in, both teams were settling on the ball and it was on the seventh-minute mark when Pwllheli had their first effort when captain Sioned Jones hit a half volley from 20 yards but unfortunately for her was straight at Wrexham goalkeeper Delyth Morgan.

Rosie Hughes, who caused Pwllheli backline no end of problems all game with her pace got her 1st goal of the game around 15 minutes in when she burst through the defence and found herself one on one with Julio and slotted into the bottom corner.

By now, Wrexham’s tails were up and Lauren Reese and Rebecca Pritchard both tested keeper Julio with the Pwllheli goalkeeper showing her worth with some vital stops.

Pwllheli striker Katie Bowe stung the palms of Morgan with a 25-yard free-kick in what would be Pwllheli’s last real effort of the game just before the halftime break.

The second half started and Wrexham were on the front foot and great work by Libby Mackenzie saw Lauren Reese have a strike that flew wide.

Within a minute though it was 2 and the livewire Mackenzie battled in midfield to get the ball and threaded through a glorious ball for the onrushing Rebecca Pritchard to stroke past the goalkeeper.

Two soon become Three when Rosie Hughes got her second of the match as she burst through with her electric pace and when one on one she wasn’t missing and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Hughes had numerous chances to get her third after causing more hassle for the backline and never stop chasing the Pwllheli defenders but this time Maria Julio was on guard to stop her with a couple of excellent saves.

Lucy Scott, Wrexham substitute, did make it four with 10 minutes left to play as she latched onto a clearance and rifled the ball home from just inside the area.

Within a minute of Scott scoring, Wrexham made it five and this time it was Rebecca Pritchard who bagged her 2nd of the game, following brilliant work by Rosie Hughes. Hughes burst through on the left-hand side and picked out Pritchard across the box for the winger to tap home.

Hughes had the final say though and got the hat-trick she so deserved when she picked herself up after being felled in the box and slammed the resulting penalty kick high in the roof of the net.
