Barry Town United 1-0 Cefn Druids: McLaggon penalty settles tight affair

Barry Town ran out 1-0 winners at home to Cefn Druids at Jenner Park on Saturday afternoon.

The goal came thanks to Kayne McLaggon’s penalty, after Aron Davies was tripped in the area. Cefn Druids had their chances throughout the match, especially one through Emmanuel Agyemang, but it wasn’t to be, and Druids remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Barry certainly started the brighter of the teams, creating plenty of chances down the wings but, on a few occasions, McLaggon couldn’t quite get his head on the end of the crosses. 15 minutes in Barry were rewarded for their quick start. Davies out sped the Druids defence and in the end was bundled over in the area. McLaggon stepped up and powered his penalty down the middle to put the hosts a goal to the good.

However, Barry seemed to lose some confidence as the half went on, and Druids really came back into the match. Williams and Wynne both had half chances each, but then came perhaps the biggest chance of the half. A mix up in the Barry defence left Agyemang one-on-one with Absalom, but instead of curling it round the keeper, Agyemang decided to pass it into the middle, but the ball was cleared away comfortably by the Town defence.

The second half had far less chances than the first. Barry aimed crosses into the area, but headers by McDonald and McLaggon couldn’t get their headers on target. Perhaps the biggest chance of the half went to Jordan Cotterill. Marcus Day went on a magnificent run down the wing, shrugging off tackle after tackle, and he picked out Cotterill but couldn’t keep his effort down and it blazed over the bar.

Even though the Druids didn’t have any clear chances in the second half, their intent to counter was always there. Faux and Wynne were always a threat at the top end of the field, causing the Barry centre-halves a few problems.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for Druids, whose winless run continues and they remain bottom of the table. The victory stretches Barry’s run to five league matches without defeat and they sit eighth in the table.

Barry’s next match is away to Cardiff Met in the semi-final of the League Cup, while Cefn Druids will be in action on the fourth of December at home also against Cardiff Met.

Player of the Match – Josef Faux

Although he was on the losing side, Faux was the best player on the field. Always testing the Barry defence and was always the go to man on the counter.
