Newtown are Gr-eight as Cardiff Corries swept aside

Cymru Premier side Newtown make light work of cup run dreamers Cardiff Corinthians on their way to the third round of the JD Welsh Cup at The Riverside.

Leading 7-1 at half time, Brett Taylor was on the scoresheet twice for his first senior competitive goals.

Louis Robles bagged a first half brace and Aaron Williams and Jake Walker also added to their season tallies. Nick Rushton was the third player to secure a brace with one in the first half and scoring the sole second-half goal with 83 minutes on the clock. Aaron Davies was the only man to find the back of the net for the Corries as he slotted home his penalty on the stroke of half-time.

As suggested by the scoreline, Newtown dominated the fixture, particularly the first half. After taking their foot off the gas, the Corries had more chances come their way in the second half but it still wasn’t enough to draw back more than one goal.

The Robins will now await their third round draw where the competition becomes open to all clubs with no regional divide between north and south. The Corries hadn’t conceded a goal before today in the competition but following the result, their attention returns to the league and FAW Amateur Cup.

It didn’t take long for the favourites to take the lead after early domination. Jake Walker rifling home off the underside of the bar.

It took just as long for the first as it did the second. Just 12 minutes on the clock when Louis Robles tapped home a low cross inside the six-yard box, a goal that was a sign of things to come for Chris Hughes’ side.

Brett Taylor looked to have the game dead and buried just a quarter of an hour in. His first senior competitive goal coming from carrying the ball out from the back and firing home from 25 yards into the top corner.

Aaron Williams then made his seasonal tally eight with his only goal of the game after 22 minutes as once again a ball was pulled back to the six-yard box for a simple finish.

Brett Taylor added to his earlier stunner with a traditional centre-back’s goal with a close-range header, making it 5-0 inside half an hour.

Another goal from inside the six-yard box came just four minutes later. Nick Rushton, unmarked, finishing off a by-line cross from the left-hand side.

Louis Robles joined his 21-year-old team mate with a brace of his own with 40 minutes on the clock. Aaron Williams squaring the ball across the face of goal once again for Robles to secure his fifth goal of the season.

In the final five minutes of the half, the Corries looked to have the best of the ball, something that couldn’t be said for the previous 40 minutes. A couple of consecutive corners well put in and failing to win the header.

From those chances towards the back end of the half came scrappy football on the brink of halftime, a miskicked clearance resulted in a Corries player being brought down in the box with the referee awarding a penalty with no hesitation. Dave Jones guessed the right way for Aaron Davies’ penalty but couldn’t keep it out.

With Grant Thompson’s side much-needed half team break, the hosts performed much better in the second half against a very different Newtown side.

Newtown made four substitutions early in the second half, followed by their fifth and final before an hour had been played.

The leaders continued to dominate the second half but was denied any chance to add to their heavily inflicting scoreline when two free headers from corners were cleared off the line.

After being heavily frustrated by missed opportunities and a better Corries performance, Henry Cowens thought he’d earnt himself a penalty on 75 minutes when his header was chested out for a corner despite desperate pleads for a penalty.

Nigel Aris had a frustrating second half after his entrance to the match as his best two chances tucking inside on his left foot were brilliantly saved and rebounded off the post, failing to add to the scoreline.

Rushton then completed the final goal of the afternoon against the tiring legs of the home side, with Louis Robles involved again, this time with the simple assist across the box.
