Pontypridd United are closing in on appointing their next manager reveals Steve Savage.
The Dragons are on the search for a manager after Andrew Stokes stood down from his post earlier this month. His assistant Danny Thomas left whilst Lee Kendall has now left Pontypridd following the conclusion of his contract.
Andrew Whittington took charge of proceedings on Saturday in their 3-2 win over Colwyn Bay, and was supported by goalkeeping coach Kendall and director of football Steve Savage.
Asked on Saturday if there was something in the pipeline by Sgorio, Savage said: “Yeah, hopefully, tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday we’ll know a little bit more.
“We’ve been speaking to a few people about the situation that we are in. It’s a difficult situation and we need someone to come in and galvanise the group. The group are not too far away as they are. Andy Whittington stepped up to lead the team along with Lee Kendall and myself.
“I try to keep away from the technical area if I can but it’s great. We’re almost there with a manager and as soon as we know what we’ve got we’ll let you guys know but we’re not far off.”
Y Clwb Pêl-doed understands that Pontypridd have a preferred candidate in mind and that they have experience of managing in the Cymru Premier.
Savage did not wish to disclose the identity of who was close to taking up the reigns at the USW Sport Park after being pressed for an answer.
He said: “Not at the moment, unfortunately not. I’d love to but we’re not there at the moment. Whoever we bring in will fit into our group. Our group are together and whoever comes in needs to move us forward.
“We’re in a great place even though we’re bottom of the league, we feel we’re not far off getting the wins, we look forward to Phase Two, and the manager will come in, enhance and support this group and help them grow.”
Should the appointment be finalised this week then the next manager will be afforded more than a fortnight to get down to business with his squad. Fixtures for Phase Two of the Cymru Premier are revealed on Friday, January 19 and the second half of the season will begin on the weekend of Friday, February 2 to Sunday, February 4.
