The Bluebirds play Buckley Town this weekend, Graham Evans speaks on all things to do with the fixture.
Caersws entertain managerless Buckley Town this week, following Ben Chamberlain’s departure over the Christmas period, manager Graham Evans speaks on all matters surrounding the game
The last time the two sides met, Buckley won the fixture 4-3. Evans says the players have to learn from their mistakes that day.
“We’re expecting another high tempo and physical game. We have to defend better than we did that day and can’t afford to miss the chances we did, it was criminal we lost that game. Buckley are a hard working side and if you’re not willing to match that then you’ll get beat, simple as that!”
Suffering two defeats on the bounce, Evans wants a reaction from the players Saturday.
“We have to! The lads know the manor of both defeats was not acceptable and both Dylan and I will be looking for a big reaction on Saturday.”
Caersws were towards the bottom end of the table last season but now sit 7th, Evans said a lot has changed at the club since the end of last season.
“To be honest, everything. We lost a number of key players at the start of last year to Welsh Premier Clubs and adding to long term injuries to other key players we virtually had to build a new team.
It was a disastrous first half to the season and we deserved to be in the position we were. When you are down there you find out who has the heart to want to battle and we had to move quickly to bring players in during January, which if you look at the second half of the season our form wasn’t too bad and ultimately saved us.
The nucleus of that end of season squad were retained and bringing Dylan McPhee in as Assistant Manager together with 5 or 6 new quality and experienced additions, we knew we’d be in a totally different position this year.”
At almost the halfway stage for most clubs, Evans said a top five place was the aim at the start and they’re close to achieving their target.
“The target at the start of the year was a top 5 finish. I know the squad we have are more than capable of that but we need to cut out the silly mistakes which have cost us a lot of points to date. Adding to that, our home form isn’t good enough and we have challenged the lads to put that right starting Saturday if we want to be challenging at the top.
Caersws are on the lookout for a few January signings
“We are looking at bringing in a new face or two so Dylan and I are working in the background on that. We’re operating with a small squad at the moment so it has to be the right player to improve us and not just a signing for the sake of it.”
Five players miss out on this fixture, with Caersws may having to play players out of position due to a shortage of central midfielders unavailable
“We have central midfielders JoJo Harries (suspended), Lance Jones (injured) and Scott Williams (unavailable) all missing this weekend which has given us a headache, however we’re confident in the quality we’ve got in the squad to be able to deal with that. Other than long term casualties Graham Jones and Jake Parr, everyone else is available.”
