Dean Wheeler has left his role as manager of Welsh football club Caerau Ely after a difficult opening to the new Cymru South campaign.
The Young Guns have picked up just one victory from their opening four matches, with that win coming against Trethomas Bluebirds.
The club confirmed Wheeler’s departure following their latest setback, with Caerau Ely now sitting 11th in the table and just two points clear of the relegation zone at this early stage of the season.
It brings an end to Wheeler’s spell in charge after a hugely successful period for the club, which included promotion to the Cymru South and a sustained challenge towards the top end of the division.

Cruel defeat and late heartbreak
Caerau Ely’s start to the campaign has been littered with moments of frustration.
They suffered a particularly cruel defeat against Carmarthen Town after recovering from three goals down to draw level at 3-3, only to concede again in stoppage time and leave empty-handed.
The Young Guns were then held to a point by Ynyshir Albions, with a late penalty denying Caerau Ely all three points.
Those results left little margin for error heading into their latest fixture, which would ultimately prove to be Wheeler’s final game in charge.
Five-goal defeat proves to be Wheeler’s final game
A 5-1 defeat to Pure Swansea brought Wheeler’s tenure to an abrupt conclusion.
The afternoon had initially promised something very different for Caerau Ely, with Liam Bishop producing a sublime finish to open the scoring.
The Young Guns went into the interval ahead, but the game unravelled after the break as their opponents turned the match around in emphatic fashion.
A Brad Gibbings brace, alongside goals from Jordan Hughes, Casey Coughlin and summer arrival Kyle Copp, condemned Caerau Ely to a heavy defeat.
The result leaves the club 11th after four matches, only two points above the relegation places.
A manager who helped transform the club
Wheeler’s departure comes despite the significant progress made during his time at the club.
Caerau Ely were promoted to the Cymru South under his stewardship and subsequently established themselves as a competitive tier two outfit.
Wheeler’s impact was also recognised individually, as he was named Cymru South Manager of the Season following a remarkable campaign with the Young Guns. Despite losing four of their opening five matches, Caerau Ely recovered superbly under Wheeler’s guidance, losing just once in their final 13 games to secure a fifth-place finish in the Cymru South — an achievement that few would have expected at the start of the campaign.
The club finished fourth and fifth during their time in the division and came close to securing another promotion last season.
With Caerau Ely having gone close to automatic promotion last term, expectations were understandably high heading into the new campaign.
The club’s ambition will be to challenge for the Cymru South title or, at the very least, secure a play-off position, and the disappointing opening to the season appears to have contributed to the decision to make a change.

Welsh football club pays tribute to Wheeler
In a statement confirming his departure, Caerau Ely stressed Wheeler’s contribution to one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.
“Caerau Ely FC can confirm that Dean Wheeler has left his role as First Team Manager.
“Following a difficult start to the new campaign, the club has made the difficult decision that the time is right for a change in direction.
“Dean leaves the club having played a huge part in one of the most successful periods in our recent history.
“Alongside his staff, he led the club to promotion to the Cymru South, established Caerau Ely as a competitive Tier 2 side and came incredibly close to another promotion last season.”
The club also highlighted Wheeler’s record in the Welsh Cup, where Caerau Ely enjoyed memorable victories over Cymru Premier opposition.
It was clear, however, that the club’s appreciation for Wheeler extended beyond results and league positions.
An enormous amount of his time, energy and commitment’
Caerau Ely went on to praise the commitment shown by Wheeler during his time at the club.
“But Dean’s contribution goes far beyond results and league positions.
“He has given an enormous amount of his time, energy and commitment to this football club and has helped drive Caerau Ely forward both on and off the pitch.”
The statement acknowledged that football inevitably brings difficult decisions, but stressed that Wheeler’s achievements should not be forgotten.
“Dean leaves with our genuine gratitude, respect and thanks for everything he has done for Caerau Ely FC.
“He will always be part of the recent history of this club and the progress we have made.”
Young Guns now face an important decision
The focus now turns to finding Wheeler’s successor and attempting to arrest the club’s difficult start to the season.
With the Young Guns sitting just above the relegation places after four games, the new manager will have the task of quickly turning results around. Up next is a trip to Baglan Dragons, before a game three days later against Treowen Stars.
Caerau Ely’s ambitions remain considerably higher than their current league position, having been genuine promotion contenders last season.
For Wheeler, meanwhile, his departure brings the end of a significant chapter after helping take the club from promotion to becoming an established Cymru South side.
The club concluded its statement by saying: “From everyone at Caerau Ely FC, players, staff, directors and supporters, thank you, Dean.
“We wish Dean and his family nothing but the very best for the future.”
