Taylor Talks: An interview with the FC Nomads manager

This coming Saturday is a vital one for Welsh National League Premier Division Champions FC Nomads of Connah’s Quay, as they welcome their third manager in just one season.

Tom Taylor is returning to the club for a second term of management after a turbulent season for the Wepre Park-based side so far.

They welcomed Andrew Dutton as their new manager in the summer, but for personal reasons he left in October 2016.

Taylor then featured as a caretaker whilst the club poured over its options, reaching a solution which saw him confirmed as manager, a role he would take up this January.

In the meantime, Craig Hett and Robbie Dean, who won the league at FC Nomads as joint managers in the 2015/16, provided cover for Taylor as he travelled abroad.

With Taylor returning this Saturday, the club sits 7th in the table on 20 points, a long way from the top where they hoped to be defending their title. However, a number of games in hand provide them with the opportunity to start climbing the table.

Their hopeful table-climb starts at Coedpoeth, where Taylor will be relishing his first game back in football after a short break.

It’s always good to be back involved in football. Nothing beats that winning feeling as a manager. Also Nomads is where it all started, so it’s great to be back.

Although he hasn’t been fully satisfied by preparations for Nomads’ first game on 2017, Taylor reveal a plan is place to assert his style on the squad.

The preparation hasn’t been ideal due to people’s social activities during the festive break. This week was a different matter with a mid week friendly, and a great turnout at training. Over the course of the next month we will have the lads fully drilled on how we want them to play and set up.

Taylor’s visit to Coedpoeth will be his inaugural game as a manager in the Premier Division, the third tier of football in Wales. However, from playing experiences he predicts a tough test.

I’ve never managed in this league so it’s a bit of the unknown, I like this as you aren’t fearing anything or taking your foot off the gas. When I played in this league they were a very competitive side, with a lot of experience so if we base it on that it will be a very tough encounter.

The league is still a realistic target in my eyes. There is going to be loads of twists and turns before the end of the season. We just have to worry about what we are doing and forget about anyone else. It’s very simple if we aim to win every game until the end of the season we will win the league. Very tough ask of my players but if you set the bar high the lads have something to aim for.
