Aaron Ramsey has emerged as the odds-on favourite to become the new manager of League One side Oxford United following the surprise dismissal of Matt Bloomfield.
The former Wales captain, 35, retired from professional football in April after a brief spell with Mexican side UNAM and is now being strongly linked with a move into management at the Kassam Stadium.
According to local outlet the Oxford Mail, Oxford United are impressed by Ramsey and have previously held discussions with the former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder. Senior figures at the club are believed to have been encouraged by his vision and potential as a coach.
Further fuelling speculation, local journalist Malachi Obrey revealed on social media that he has “reason to believe there has been movement” regarding a possible appointment, suggesting talks may be progressing behind the scenes.

Ramsey’s managerial experience remains limited. He took interim charge of his boyhood club Cardiff City towards the end of last season but was unable to prevent the Bluebirds from suffering relegation.
Despite his lack of experience in the dugout, Ramsey has been actively preparing for a coaching career. He is currently studying for his UEFA Pro Licence and has spent time shadowing Wales manager Craig Bellamy as he continues to develop his managerial credentials.
Oxford United are now weighing up their options as they search for Bloomfield’s successor, with Ramsey increasingly viewed as a leading candidate for the role.
Craig Bellamy tips Aaron Ramsey for Wales job
Craig Bellamy has offered strong praise for Aaron Ramsey’s long-term potential in management, suggesting the former Wales captain could eventually take charge of the national team, even as he continues to be linked with a possible move to Burnley.
Speaking about Ramsey’s future, Bellamy was emphatic about his belief that the midfielder-turned-coach is destined for a senior role in the game:
“I’m pretty sure of it and I’m pretty sure one day you’ll be speaking to him here (as Wales manager),” Bellamy said. “That’s my opinion, by the way. I’m not recommending anything happens before you jump.
“I just believe he’s going to be that talented and I believe he’s going to be a big asset to whoever he’s with and I’d like to see that with Wales one day. I don’t know when, could be two years, four years, 40 years, but I believe we might see that one day.”
