National League North side South Shields have strengthened their squad by signing a left-back from reigning Cymru Premier champions The New Saints.

Mariners Park boss Mike Williamson, formerly of Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, has secured his first addition of the summer transfer window since replacing Ian Watson, who went to Rochdale.

Newcastle-born defender Jordan Marshall returns to the North East after 13 years in Scotland. He departs Park Hall following three years with TNS.

New beginnings at National League North promotion hopefuls

It’s all change on South Tyneside following the appointment of Mike Williamson at South Shields.

The Mariners, based in Tyne and Wear, finished second in the National League North last season but narrowly missed out on promotion after defeat to Kidderminster Harriers in the play-off final in May.

“I’m delighted,” said Marshall to the South Shields official club website after completing the move.

“It’s been in the process for a few weeks, so I’m just glad to get it all official now.

“I’ve always kept a close eye on the club, being from the North East, and it’s always been a club on the rise. What really caught my eye was the style of play.

“They had a great season last year and, although they didn’t get it over the line, we want to go one better this season.”

A Cymru Premier title winner

Marshall joined The New Saints in October 2023 and quickly became a regular feature in the squad, going on to record 65 appearances in total. From a creative standpoint, he contributed consistently, finishing with 20 assists and also adding a goal to his name.

During the most recent campaign, he made 32 appearances across all competitions, featuring in European qualifiers for both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Conference League. He also experienced group-stage European football at Park Hall, and has since paid tribute to The New Saints as he brought an end to his three-year spell at the club, before reflecting on the next chapter of his career.

He said: “Thank you to @tnsfc for an unbelievable three years and giving me the proudest moment of my career. Some brilliant people at that club, all the best.”

Spell in Scotland with Dundee and Queen of the South

Primarily operating as a left-back, the 29-year-old developed through Carlisle United’s academy before establishing himself in Scottish football, where he amassed over 200 senior appearances with Queen of the South and Dundee.

His time in Scotland began with four years at Queen of the South, after which he joined Dundee FC while they were still in the Championship. He quickly became an influential figure in his first season, helping the club secure promotion to the Scottish Premiership through the play-offs.
