Kennedy says Risca United match is a must win

Monmouth Town’s Ross Kennedy says that his side will need to pick up three points on Friday as his side take on relegation rivals Risca United.

Both sides in recent weeks have picked up surprise results, both recording victories but on Friday this game between the two sides, who are separated by 31 miles but only five places in the table.

With games succumbing to the weather in recent weeks, Momouth have played more games than anyone else around and have only six games remaining in the season, so a win is important on Friday evening.

“We have to win. We’ve played more games than those around us so we have to go out to win the game.” said Kennedy.

Fortunately for Monmouth there are no injuries or suspensions to worry about, so Kennedy will be able to choose from a fresh side.

Last week, Monmouth did pick up points against teams around them, by grabbing a win in the dying moments against Caldicot Town through a Rob Laurie header.

“It was a huge relief to finally win again. It’s been a tough couple of months for everyone. I think it was only our 2nd clean sheet of the season which was also pleasing but if I’m honest at this stage of the season I don’t care how we win we just need to pick up points.”

Monmouth will play on a different  surface this Friday night as they travel to Ystrad Mynach to play on a 3G surface at the Centre of Excellence, but Kennedy is welcoming that thought.

“It will be a welcome relief to play on a 3G if I’m honest. The current state of most grass pitches is awful because of the weather over last couple months. Ours especially!”

One player who may have a part to play on Friday is new signing Samuel Oxley who arrived from the Hereford United youth academy.

“Sams only 17 but settled into our squad well. He’s a good lad. It will take a bit of time for him to adapt to the physicality but it won’t be long before he’s scoring goals.”
