Steven Tames reveals confidence is reason behind his Welsh Premier League success

Bala Town striker Steven Tames says his confidence in his own ability is why he is so prolific in front of goal for the Lakesiders.

The 26-year-old is enjoying a purple patch in front of goal and is averaging a goal every 85 minutes.

Liverpudlian Tames signed for Bala this summer, joining from English non-league side Witton Albion.

Asked if there was any secret to his run of form, Tames said: “I’d say it’s down to being confident, making the right movement and with the quality, we have in the squad overall helps me a lot whoever plays on that day.

We have got a good squad different lads have assisted me in different games and few of the other lads have chipped in with goals and some very important goals as well.”

Tames currently has 17 goals in 18 league appearances, which is almost an average of a goal a game.

He’s also just four off of Greg Draper’s tally of 21 last season which saw him win the Golden Boot.

“I didn’t expect to have 17 before Christmas and be leading but it’s nice to be there.

There is still a lot of games left to play and a lot of important points to play for before the split.”

Having played for clubs like Hyde, Vauxhall Motors, Warrington and Stalybridge, Tames has experienced a lot of non-league football.

With his previous club, Tames scored 49 goals in 90 appearances for Witton Albion.

He’s also got 40 appearances in the National League under his belt, where he played for Southport.

Tames has given his opinion on how the Welsh Premier League compares to the other leagues he’s played in.

“I’d say the similarities are each game is competitive you’re always in for a game whoever you play.

I’d say more teams in the Welsh Premier try to play more football with most of the pitches in the league being on artificial grass so it makes it easier.

Sometimes in the English leagues, it can be tough with some of the grass pitches not being great when the weather gets bad.”

Over Christmas, Bala Town will face a tough test in Welsh Premier League leaders the Connah’s Quay Nomads.

The Lakesiders and the Nomads have been in direct competition the last number of years, competing for second place. The two sides are also the last two Welsh Cup winners.

“They’re the team everyone is chasing now.

“It’s going to be two tough games against them but two games am looking forward to playing and hopefully we can have two positive results against them.”
