Y Clwb Pêl-droed

Your home for Welsh domestic football!

Which Welsh League title-winning team did you vote as the best in this decade?

Y Clwb Pêl-droed drew up a shortlist of the ten teams that won the Welsh League Division One title.

The readers of the website made their voices heard as they voted for their favourite title winning team.

See below who came out on top as you celebrated everything about the best title-winning teams:

10. Goytre United

2009/2010

The least favoured Champion is Goytre United who had the slenderest margin of victory.

They piped Cambrian & Clydach in a then 18-team division by just a point.

A 2-1 win away at Afan Lido on May 19 secured the title for the Port Talbot side.

9. Bryntirion Athletic

2010/2011

Penybont in their former guise of Bryntirion Athletic won their first of two Division One titles in the decade.

Before merging with Bridgend Town, Bont were known as Bryntirion and played where they play now, before the impressive ground changes were implemented.

Again, Bont were one of the Championship winning sides who had to watch on as second-placed Afan Lido claimed a Welsh Premier League spot.

Players in the squad included Sean Williams who made an impressive step up from local league club Brynna.

Jonathan Cuss – a prolific striker with nine years of service at the club – was also pivotal to their title win.

Welsh League stalwarts such as Rhys Llewellyn and Anthony Rawlings were also involved with the squad headed up by manager Francis Ford.

8. Cardiff Metropolitan

2015/2016

The Archers were forced to watch on as Haverfordwest claimed promotion to the Welsh top flight in 2015 after Caerau Ely passed on promotion following their success. What made it even crueller was the Bluebirds being promoted on the virtue of goals scored after both had a goal difference of +37.

Rather than dwell on what could have been, Met responded in fine fashion as they beat a resurgent Barry Town United to the title.

It was a lower points tally than what they had achieved in the previous season and Met actually lost more games than Barry, but the Archers had four more than Chesterfield’s men and booked their place in the Welsh top flight for the first time.

7. Llanelli Town

2017/2018

Like many teams who have won the Division One title, Llanelli followed in the footsteps of Barry and Met in riding the wave of success following Championship wins in the feeder divisions.

The Reds who were managed by former Neath striker Andy Hill had the marquee signing of ex Swansea City star Lee Trundle to call upon.

Trundle was part of a Championship winning tour, increasing a number of gates during his return to Welsh domestic football.

There was a 15 point gap over Haverfordwest County as the Reds celebrated their return to the Cymru Premier following years in the wilderness.

6. Monmouth Town

2013/2014

In one of the closely contested title races, Monmouth Town were one of the trendsetters in winning all three Welsh League titles.

The Kingfishers beat Taffs Well to the title by two points after winning against Cwmbran Celtic on the final day of the season.

Taffs Well had finished 11 days prior to the fixture at Celtic Park and were made to rue a 2-2 draw away at Goytre United.

Monmouth’s squad included Cardiff Metropolitan talisman Eliot Evans.

5. Barry Town United

2016/2017

Despite losing less games than Met, Barry missed out on a consecutive promotion by finishing four points behind Met in 2014/2015.

Like Met in the previous season, Barry didn’t lose heart and achieved their goal of promotion a year later by beating Penybont to the title.

A squad with players from their Division Three days following their demotion, coupled with players like Chris Hugh and Luke Cooper was the recipe for success.

In the same season, this Barry side reached the Nathaniel MG Cup final and had held eventual winners TNS for a majority of the match.

4. Cambrian & Clydach Vale

2011/2012

Cambrian & Clydach Vale won their first and only Division One title in 2011/2012.

Finishing six points ahead of Taffs Well who were also in search of their first title, the Sky Blues brought the title back to the Rhondda for the first time since 2005.

Despite their success, top flight football still alluded the area as they were unable to meet the stringent restrictions of the Cymru Premier licensing.

Then a player at the Dane Williams is now the manager of the club after tasting success on the field.

Lee Matthews – also a staff member at the club – had been a part of it too.

3. West End

2012/2013

Denying Cambrian & Clydach Vale of a second consecutive Welsh League title were West End who beat Cambrian by two points to the title.

Despite losing their final game of the season to Cambrian, West End had already secured the title after beating Taffs Well on May 2013.

2. Penybont

2018/2019

Despite going the whole league season unbeaten, Penybont’s ‘Invincibles’ are only second in this poll.

They became the first team in 30 years to go the entire league season unbeaten in the Welsh Football League.

Their points tally of 80 points with 25 games won and five draws was also a record for a 16-team Division One.

Having had success as a player, Rhys Griffiths had his hands on a trophy as manager as they lifted the trophy at Undy Athletic.

They said goodbye to the Welsh League with a 9-0 thrashing of Cwmamman United.

1. Caerau Ely

2014/2015

Headed up by now STM Sports coach Nana Baah, plucky underdogs Caerau Ely became the first Cardiff team to win the title since 1972.

Having secured a seventh-placed finish in their first season back in the second tier after winning promotion, the Young Guns secured an unlikely title charge, a year before Leicester City’s Premier League win.

It was a win so unlikely that they basked in their glory with an open top bus parade on a Cardiff sightseeing bus.

Nana Baah had already lost a number of players to clubs in pre-season, seeing him patch together a squad that was aimed to compete rather than mount a remarkable Championship victory.

They finished five points ahed of nearest rivals Haverfordwest County and boasted the best attack in the league with 75 goals scored.

Their success did come at a cost though as captain David Vincent – who had served nine years with the club – had a trial with Newport County and later earned a move to the Cymru Premier after signing for Port Talbot.

Callum Sainty – one of the youngest players to win the Welsh League – was also part of the title winning team. He later joined Hereford before returning to Barry.

Missing out on promotion to the then Welsh Premier League proved costly as key players departed following their title victory.

Caerau were relegated two seasons later but have since returned to the second tier.
