Connah’s Quay Nomads 2-0 Aberystwyth Town: Disney and Edwards on target as Nomads remain unbeaten

Connah’s Quay came into this game off the back of a 4-1 win away win at Haverfordwest with several key men starting to come back from injury whereas Aberystwyth drew 1-1 with local rivals Newtown last time out and made a new signing ahead of this game with them bringing in experienced defender Johnathan Foligno from Penrhyncoch this week. The 39 year old went straight into Gavin Allen’s starting Lineup.

The game started even with both sides battling it out in midfield and trying to unlock one another. The first chance of the game happened when Ilan Hughes made a darting run on the wing and hit a ball in to the box only for it to hit the crossbar and get cleared by the Connah’s Quay defense. The next chance of the game came when Sameron Dool gathered the ball and tried to hit a cross in to the box only for it hit an arm which resulted in referee Thomas Owen awarding a penalty to the home side, Connah’s Quay defender John Disney stepped up to take the spot kick and slotted the ball in the left hand corner past Connor Roberts in the Aberystwyth Net.

The home team continued to apply the pressure as the half went on and they were rewarded because of this on the 28th minute when midfielder Sameron Dool picked out Danny Davies who proceeded to run at Aberystwyth defender Lee Jenkins to the byline and cut it back for Aaron Edwards to slot home. The Seasiders had a chance to grab a goal back on the 39th minute when Jamie Veale hit a cross into Marc Williams only for him to head straight at Lewis Brass the Connah’s Quay keeper.

The Second Half began and Aberystwyth were the first team to have a chance. Jamie Veale had a shot from a free kick but it deflected wide for a corner. The resulting corner was taken but the strong nomads defense cleared. Connah’s Quay had a chance to make it three when they earnt two consecutive corners but both were cleared by Aberystwyth. Morrison nomads manager tried a different approach in the second half as he put defender Priestly Farquharson upfront to try and trouble the Aberystwyth defense.

The next chance of the game came in the 60th minute as midfielder Declan Poole had a chance with a low effort at goal but it just went wide. Connah’s quay continued to have the more of the possession and they were close to making it three when Declan Poole had another chance in the 73rd minute as he ran from the right wing in to the box and had a shot from 12 yards out but it was well blocked by Connor Roberts Aber’s number 1.

The visitors then went on to apply a little bit of pressure of their own as Thomas Rimmer whipped a teasing ball into the Nomads box but he couldn’t find anyone. The away side then had an appeal for a penalty as they felt there was a handball by a Nomads player in the box during but referee Thomas Owen waved away the protests. The pressure was then resumed by the home side as they had shot after shot but Connor Roberts stood firm in goal saving numerous shots, Jay Owens 22 yard shot from the edge of the box being the closest to going in the net but it was dragged just wide of the post.

The last ten minutes of the game continued to be much the same as Connah’s Quay controlled the ball and kept testing the Aberystwyth Goalkeeper. There was room for one more chance for the visitors in added time when Jamie Veale had another shot at goal from a free kick but it deflected out to Thomas Rimmer who  then fired the rebound wide.

Overall it was a truly dominant display from Connah’s Quay here as they gained the three points and continue to remain unbeaten this season however Aberystwyth Boss Gavin Allen will have the positive that his side battled to the end this evening and kept the nomads from scoring more than two.
