Haverfordwest County manager Wayne Jones has provided supporters with a New Years update to see in 2021.

The Bluebirds currently sit outside the top six of the Cymru Premier, with the league currently suspended as a result of the tier four restrictions imposed by the Welsh Government.

Jones, who is overseeing the West Wales’ sides first top flight campaign since 2016, provided some news on transfers, as well as their ambitions for the remainder of the season.

Haverfordwest have almost matched their points tally for the whole of their previous time in the Cymru Premier, in which they were relegated. However the Bluebirds are in a better position now as they aim to finish in the top six to secure their status.

“We are most probably exceeding the expectations, but we have earned the right to be there with our hard work,” stated Jones.

“Our aim is to finish tenth this season; that hasn’t changed and the philosophy to keep level headed and work hard remains.”

“It’s the here and now that is important.  I think 33 points will keep us in the league and that is my objective, although I’ve been in the game long enough to know a run of defeats could see us drawn into the mire of a relegation dogfight.

“I won’t be getting carried away with things at present and come the restart in the New Year, neither will anyone associated to the club.”

The work done pre season has typified Haverfordwest’s resolve to establish themselves in the Cymru Premier. In the last year, the club has seen a new chairman come into the club in the form of new London businessman Rob Edwards.

The Bluebirds squad are now all contracted players, allowing them to work as an ‘elite football club’ as the only non contract player, veteran midfielder Nick Palmer pursuing offers of regular game time in the Championship South.

Matt Turner, who arrived on loan from Leeds United, has penned an extension with the club, however he has returned to train with the Whites, until lockdown is over.

Another loan starlet who has impressed this season is the returning Danny Williams, who has scored seven goals so far.

“We have secured an extension to goalkeeper Matt Turners contract until the end of the season” stated Jones.  “He is currently back in Yorkshire training with his parent club until the lockdown is over,

“We anticipate welcoming him back to the Bridge Meadow on January 11th, where he will push Wojciech Gajda for the number one shirt once again.

“We are hopeful also of extending the loan deal for striker Danny Williams from Cardiff City

“He has established an understanding with Marcus Griffiths, Ben Fawcett and Jack Wilson which suits the offensive way we want to play.”

As well as securing the futures of two temporary players, the club have had to stave off interest in one of their star performances.

Jack Wilson, who has penned a contract with the club, has been subject of interest, following his eight goals this season.

However no firm offers have come in for him yet, with his immediate future currently at the Bridge Meadow

“We have had no firm offers from a Club and he is contracted with us until 2022, he will just continue doing what he does best, which is great news for me and the club.”

Two new faces could arrive during the January transfer window, with one coming from a league rival and the other from a professional club.

Jones revealed: “We are at this stage of the season and in a position of not releasing anyone from their contracts and we have not had a request to do so from a player.

“We are in the process of taking an option to sign two offensive players who have been released, one by a professional club and one from a rival Cymru Premier side.

“If they can add to the squad dynamics, as they come with good pedigree and tuition then we could well see them in a blue shirt this season.”
