Caernarfon Town unsuccessful in overturning Lewis Brass’ red card

Caernarfon Town goalkeeper Lewis Brass has had his appeal against the red card he received at Connah’s Quay on Saturday rejected.

The 24-year-old was dismissed for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity in the Canaries’ 1-0 defeat at Deeside Stadium.

The former Nomads keeper will miss the club’s final day fixture against Barry Town United as well as their UEFA Europa Conference League play-off match with the Linnets a week later.

A disciplinary panel met remotely to discuss the offence which saw Brass collide with the Nomads’ Jamie Insall.

Caernarfon Town’s case was that Brass and Insall did not collide and provided video footage.

They also argued that Insall’s last touch was away from goal and deemed it to not be an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

From reviewing the footage which was provided to the panel as a result of its broadcast on Sgorio, their findings were as followed:

“The panel were more sure than not that contact had occurred between Lewis Brass and the opposing player.

“Although this contact may have been minimal as both players were running at full speed it was likely to unbalance the opposing player.

“The panel considered where the player would have next touched the ball if he had continued and not fallen to the floor.

“The panel agreed although the touch was away from goal the player would have had an opportunity to have a clear shot on goal from around the edge of the penalty area with no goalkeeper in position. In the panel’s opinion, this was a goal-scoring opportunity.”

The panel were also of the belief that at least one of the match officials had a clear view of the incident and were able to make an appropriate decision.

As a result, the panel concluded with: “For these reasons, the disciplinary panel decided that the decision to send Lewis Brass off was not a clear and obvious error. Therefore, the claim is unsuccessful, and the standard punishment of a one-match suspension should remain.

“As this was LB’s second sending off this season, this automatically increased the suspension from one match to two matches.”

As a result Gwynedd club had to pay £314 to appeal the decision which did not go in their favour and now they will be without their goalkeeper for two key fixtures.

Brass had been brought in as a replacement for Josh Tibbetts who had suffered a season-ending injury.

It is likely that Tyler French will deputise in their absence.
