David Cotterill has made the move across the Cymru Premier to join Newtown after his departure from Barry Town United.

The 33-year-old was on the lookout for a new club after announcing his departure from Jenner Park Stadium back in June.

Cotterill had been with Barry for a season-and-a-half and finished the season with five goals in 27 appearances for the Linnets.

Commenting on his move to the Mid Wales outfit, Cotterill said: “I’m happy to have signed Newtown in the Cymru Leagues.

“I want to keep enjoying it and felt this was the right fit for me. Let’s keep going until the legs pack in on me!”

“I am delighted to get the signing over the line and get David on board,” said manager Chris Hughes on his latest addition to the official club website.

“His experience is just what we need and he also adds know how to our squad.”

His first competitive game could be on August 7, when Newtown travel to Cymru South outfit Cambrian & Clydach Vale. Their league season then begins on August 13 when they welcome The New Saints to Latham Park in their season opener.

The former Wales international could then make his return to his former club in October when Gavin Chesterfield’s side host the Robins.

His decision to stay in the league means that three players from Wales’ 26-man squad at EURO 2016 will continue to ply their trade in the division. Jazz Richards joined Haverfordwest County in January, meanwhile David Edwards a summer addition for Bala Town.

Newtown were recently knocked out of the UEFA Europa Conference League, losing 5-0 over two legs to League of Ireland outfit Dundalk.

They have since announced that their pre-season fixtures against Ellesmere Rangers and then Sutton Coldfield Town.
