Barry Town United won their third consecutive Cymru Premier fixture with a historic one-goal victory over reigning champions Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Gavin Chesterfield’s milestone appearance was celebrated in style, as he became the longest serving manager in the club’s history.

Rhys Kavanagh’s opened his scoring account for the season, as first half goal separated the two sides.

A missed penalty early doors and a second-half red card proved costly for the Nomads, who lost their first game of the season.

The victory puts Barry into third position in the table on 10 points, three behind leaders TNS.

Connah’s Quay have dropped to fifth spot and are five points off top spot.

The Nomads showed their intent within the first two minutes, pumping a long throw into the Barry box which was headed away by Curtis McDonald.

Callum Sainty tried to run though the centre of the Connah’s Quay defence before John Disney put in a good tackle to stop him.

The visitors were awarded a penalty in the sixth minute as Callum Morris was brought down inside the box. Morris took the spot kick sending the ball low to the left corner but goalkeeper Mike Lewis was across quickly to save.

The Nomads kept the pressure on Barry with a long range effort just wide before Aron Williams saw his effort saved by Lewis.

Marcus Day cut in from the right but saw his shot blocked.

Arguably against the run of play, it was Barry who took the lead. A soft header out of the box was sent back in by Clayton Green and the ball fell to the feet of Kavanagh, who struck the ball first time his low drive got the better of Oliver Byrne.

Byron Harrison put the ball in the net after getting past Lewis from a long ball in. Harrison fouled Lewis as he won the ball and the goal was ruled out.

Andy Morrison’s side came firing out of the blocks in the second half. Jamie Insall found space in-behind but saw his effort saved by Lewis.

Callum Sainty hit a shot on the turn in the box but it was blocked by the Connah’s Quay defence.

Insall found Harrison in space, but the latter’s attempt on goal flew over the crossbar.

As Barry went on a fast counter attack, Disney pulled down the Barry player and as the last man was sent off.

The ten men weren’t too affected and did still create chances.

Craig Curran failed to hit the target after a nice set up by Insall.

Connah’s Quay tried to level the game and Insall had a great chance to do just that. A good ball into the box found him but he headed over the bar.

Barry began to slow the game down as they looked to see out the match and get the win. Connah’s Quay never really troubled Mike Lewis goal as the game drew to a close.
