Connah’s Quay move for former Preston forward Connor Simpson

Connah’s Quay Nomads have begun their January transfer business by announcing the signing of former Preston North End striker Connor Simpson.

Simpson has been training with the club for the last month and the move is subject to international clearance given his previous club was abroad.

Should the conclusion of today’s meeting be that Welsh football can return then his first match would be against Deeside rivals Flint Town United on January 14.

He is also eligible to represent the club in the final of the Nathaniel MG Cup as well as the Welsh Cup.

The 21-year-old had most recently been playing for Kórdrengir and scored five goals in 19 appearances for the Reykjavík based side.

His last game though came in September with Icelandic football operating on a different schedule to other countries around Europe.

He had also been on trial at Norwich City and played a PDL2 match for the Canaries back in February 2021.

Simpson, born in Guisborough began his career at Hartlepool United and made two appearances in the Football League, before their relegation in 2017.

He played seven times in the National League for the Pools, becoming the first player born in the 21st century to score for them.

He wouldn’t stay in the nonleague long though as he joined Championship side, Preston, in January 2018 for £50,000 and immediately made his debut against Aston Villa.

It would be his only senior appearance for the Lilywhites however as he was loaned to Hyde United, before then experiencing loans at Carlisle United and Accrington Stanley.

His contract wasn’t extended by the Lancashire club and he joined League of Ireland outfit Cork City in August last year.

He would make just five senior appearances though, failing to find the net.
