Sorba Thomas is in contention to play for Wales against Czech Republic at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight but two years ago, he was almost lining up against the country he represents.

Flashback to two years ago, Thomas, who was on the books of Boreham Wood at the time, had played 32 times that season and got five goals in the National League.

His form caught the eye of Three Lions boss Paul Fairclough, and he was called up for the third installment of the ‘C’ international fixture.

So in March 2020, Thomas was named as part of a 16-man squad to face Wales at Caernarfon, a fixture that has acted as a showcase for players to get a chance in the professional game.

COVID-19 spoiled those plans as the game was cancelled, whilst football seasons were cut short with the uncertainty of how the pandemic would affect football and the wider world.

Despite the cancellation of the fixture, Thomas didn’t need the fixture to get him back into professional football after being released by West Ham United.

The tricky winger in his fourth year at Meadow Park earned a move to Championship outfit Huddersfield Town in January 2021.

Since then he’s not looked back, after playing seven times for the Terriers, he has cemented himself as a first-team player with the Yorkshire outfit.

He has been ever-present in the league this season with ten assists and three goals with Huddersfield harbouring Premier League ambitions.

In between his form for Huddersfield, he was called up to the Welsh national team, playing against the Czech Republic as a substitute, before playing against Estonia.

From March 2020 to September 2021, it was quite the eighteen months for the Newham-born winger. At one point he was going to be singing God Save the Queen against Wales, but now he’s proudly part of Cymru and belting out Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.
