Caernarfon Town close in on Cymru Premier top six after Colwyn Bay win

Caernarfon Town and Colwyn Bay captains exchange handshakes with the referee.

Caernarfon Town saw out a narrow 2-1 home victory against an unlucky Colwyn Bay side to put themself in a strong position to secure a top-six spot in the Cymru Premier.

Vital second half goals from Marc Williams and Zack Clarke earnt the Canaries all three points as they continue their pursuit for confirmation of a Championship Playoff place.

Caernarfon started off the game well with sustained pressure on the Bay box within the first 10 minutes , Llandudno’s own Louis Lloyd looking very much up for it against his previous bitter rivals and he almost broke the deadlock if it had not been for heroics from returning Sam Hart to deny the youngster.

Town continued to play up for the home crowd and the watchers at home as they began to put on a good show, slick football down both sides created good chances only for them to be squandered by the two forwards Zack Clarke and Adam Davies.

Going into the break it was all Caernarfon, Bay having little chances to break from their half as the yellow wall suppressed any attack from inform Udi Akpan and Jamie Cumming.

Colwyn Bay came out of the blocks fast into the second half however, understanding now what they must do to try and break down Town and matching them in the physicality department. Great chances from Cai Owen and captain Tom McCready gave the travelling Bay faithful hope that they could get something from this second half of football.

The quality of Caernarfon over shone this Bay barrage as Marc Williams pounced upon confusion in the penalty area to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the hour mark, a scrappy goal but a huge one in Caenarfon’s season as they took back control of this feisty affair.

Changes from both sides freshened up the game as we crept into the last 20, seagulls substitute Matty Hill flashed a shot just shy of the post mere minutes after coming on but it would be the home side again with a stunning piece of play down the left flank, all the making and finishing of the number 19 Zack Clarke to double the lead, many Cymru Premier fans believing that he is one of the standout standing of the season.

The game wasn’t over there though as a magical free kick from Tom McCready just under 10 minutes later saw Bay back in the game, a deflated Hari Thomas in the Caernarfon goal couldn’t quite reach it as it was tucked away into the keeper’s bottom left. Thomas would redeem himself though as the match approached the dying embers, Colwyn Bay looking for an equaliser to squander the home side’s plans would only see the gloves off the youngster as Caernarfon played down the time on the clock.

After nearly 100 minutes of action, the referee blew his whistle to end the match as the roar of the home fans bellowed over the stadium, three. massive points for the Canaries see them hold onto 6th place with just Cardiff Met left to play in the season in just under two weeks.

Bay we’re left bewildered as yet again in success weeks they had left their comebacks til too late in the match to earn something from the game.
