Connah’s Quay Nomads have confirmed a major transfer development, with former Everton prospect Rhys Hughes set to join The New Saints at the end of the current season.
The 24-year-old, who was named JD Cymru Premier Player of the Season last year, will make the switch in the summer as TNS prepare for their upcoming UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign. The move represents a significant addition for the league champions, while marking the end of an important chapter for the Nomads.
Connah’s Quay have enjoyed a strong campaign, securing a second-place finish and with it a spot in the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds. The club has credited Hughes as a key figure in their success, both for his consistency and attacking output.
It has also been revealed that the Nomads rejected an approach for Hughes during the January transfer window, opting to retain his services as they pushed to secure European football for next season.
A statement from the Deeside club read: “We thank Rhys for his professionalism and contribution during the past two years. We wish him luck in his future career (but not when he plays against the Nomads, of course).”
His departure will undoubtedly be felt, but it underscores The New Saints’ continued ability to attract top talent in the JD Cymru Premier as they aim to strengthen for another European campaign.
The New Saints have a track record of signing top talent from their league rivals. Sion Bradley, who was named JD Cymru Premier Player of the Season in 2023/24 after scoring eight goals and providing nine assists, has since returned to the Canaries.

Rhys Hughes’ career – including Everton start
Hughes has been a standout performer since arriving at Connah’s Quay, registering an impressive 32 goals and 16 assists in 72 appearances for the club. His influence has been particularly evident this season, where he has contributed 15 goals and 10 assists in 30 league matches, featuring in every single game.
Earlier this week, manager John Disney described Hughes as an ‘unbeliveable‘ footballer, following his role in the win against Penybont.
The Wrexham-born midfielder began his football career at Everton, spending 18 years at the Merseyside club. Although he never made a senior appearance for the Toffees, he was a key member of their academy. He was named the Keith Tamlin Award winner, an honour that “represents all that is best in the Everton Youth Academy.
“He’s got ability,” said his then manager at the time, David Unsworth, to the Liverpool Echo.
“He is an outstanding footballer with great technique and a great set-ball delivery. “Those type of players are worth their weight in gold.”
He has represented Wales internationally at U17, U19, and U21 levels, making 10 appearances for the U21 side.
After leaving Everton in 2022, he joined Tranmere Rovers, making 25 appearances over two seasons. During his second year, he spent time on loan in the National League North with spells at both Chester and Curzon Ashton.
