Cardiff Airport are preparing for a new chapter after it was confirmed that one of Welsh football’s long-serving managers Stephen Jones will step down from his role.

Jones, who has dedicated 21 years to the Vale of Glamorgan club, will leave the dugout but remain a central figure, taking up a new position as Chairman. In his new role, he will focus on the club’s long-term development, with ambitions of guiding Cardiff Airport toward the Cymru South.

The transition comes as the club nears the end of its first season in the Ardal Leagues South West. With one fixture remaining, Cardiff Airport are on course to secure a 10th-place finish, a respectable platform to build on in the seasons ahead.

During his time in charge, Jones oversaw one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. His achievements include lifting the Premier Division title on three occasions, as well as securing the WJ Owen Cup.

Cardiff Airport statement

Reflecting on his decision, Jones shared an emotional and candid statement, highlighting both the pride he feels in the club’s journey and the personal challenges that have influenced his choice.

“After 21 unforgettable years, the time has come for me to step aside as First Team Manager and move into a role behind the scenes, giving our managers and coaches the chance to carry the success we’ve built together.”

Jones also looked back to the early days of his tenure, when he and Lenny Western first took charge in 2005 with ambitions of building a competitive and respected side.

“When Lenny Western and I took charge in 2005, we had a simple dream: To build something special. What followed was far more than either of us could have imagined. Together, we turned Cardiff Airport into a force within the Vale of Glamorgan League, collecting honours that will forever be part of this club’s history.”

Under Jones’ leadership, the club enjoyed one of the most successful periods in its history, securing multiple league titles and cup honours, and establishing itself as a strong presence in local football.

However, his decision has also been shaped by personal circumstances. Jones revealed the ongoing impact of a serious injury suffered in 2024, which has made the demands of management increasingly difficult.

“Life has its own challenges. Since my injury in 2024, my health has been difficult, and the brain injury I suffered continues to affect me.”

Despite the difficulty of stepping away, Jones acknowledged that the timing felt right.

“As much as it hurts me to admit it, the time is right to step aside from management.”

Known for his passionate and outspoken presence on the sidelines, Jones also reflected on the relationships he has built — and the occasional clashes- throughout his career in the game.

“Over the years, I’ve crossed paths with countless managers, referees and league officials. Like in any sport, some relationships were warm, others… let’s say lively.”

“I’ve been loud, opinionated, and fiercely protective of my club. Right or wrong, I always gave everything for my players, my staff and everyone connected to Cardiff Airport.”

While his role is changing, his commitment to the club remains as strong as ever. As Chairman, Jones will now focus on long-term growth and strengthening the club’s connection to its community.

“Although I’m leaving the touchline, I’m not leaving the club. The role of Chairman brings a new challenge, one that will keep me focused on growing football in our community and ensuring this club continues to bring joy to everyone involved.”

He closed his statement with gratitude and a touch of humour, acknowledging the many relationships formed over the years.

“It’s been a privilege to make so many friends along the way and no doubt a few enemies too. But at least the referees and officials can enjoy a quieter afternoon from now on.

“Thank you all, truly.”
