“We want that trophy back” Seargeant issues rallying call as TNS progress

The New Saints secured a place in the 4th round draw of the JD Welsh Cup following their 3-0 victory over Cwmbran Celtic, courtesy of a Chris Seargeant hat-trick.

After going ahead through a penalty, the Saints continued to show their class in the first half by adding a second before the interval. Before they finally scored a third just three minutes into the second half.

Seargent bagged all three goals in the game and was delighted to get on the scoresheet in a game bereft of chances.

But, the midfielder has now issued a rallying call for the club to win the trophy they’ve not win since 2014/15.

Nice to score a couple of goals, nice to start a game,” said Seargeant.

“Don’t think we had many chances to be honest, we knew it would be a tough game so it was important, took our chances when we got them.”

That’s the main thing yes, we want that trophy back,” said Sergeant

The wet and windy weather in South Wales made it challenging for the boys from Oswertry, and TNS had to adapt to the playing surface to secure the result that was needed.

Seargeant stated the conditions weren’t ideal, but insisted it’s part of the magic of the cup

“Really difficult, very boggy, very muddy. That’s what cup ties are all about.”

“Got to take your chances, cause you won’t get many, in conditions like this.”

The Welsh Premier League champions were in a comfortable position heading into the break, but Seargeant has insisted that Ruscoe ensured the players didn’t get complacent.

“Keep doing what we are doing, not to get complacent, put the work in and pick up the bits and have a couple of chances.”

“Not give them anything to hang on to and give them a lift really, then the third goal helped us out cause it was quite early in the second half. “

Ruscoe’s men are under intense pressure to retain their league title, with the league wide open for the first time in a number of years.

Both Barry Town United and Connah’s Quay Nomads are pushing the title favourites for the title, and Seargent has insisted that the squad must focus on kicking on in the Welsh Premier League.

“Going to be very tough, we haven’t been great that’s obvious but we got to take this to the league now that’s the main thing, put this to bed and get the 3 points in the league and kick on again.”
