The Welsh Premier League’s Young Player of the Year, Momodou Touray has shown his gratitude to those who voted for him in the award.

The Newport County forward scored 14 goals during his time at Jenner Park. His goals helped fire Barry Town United back into the Europa League.

On Saturday, Touray was named Young Player of the Year ahead of teammate Robbie Patten and The New Saints’ Tom Holland.

Speaking to the South Wales Argus, the Barry loanee was appreciative of his award: “I just want to say thanks to everyone that voted for me to win young player of the season.

“There were two other candidates who were brilliant – Tom Holland obviously won the league and the cups with The New Saints and Robbie Patten showed his class for Barry.

“I’m delighted to have won it in front of those two. It was my first season and I didn’t know what to expect but I hit the ground running.

The 19-year-old is currently on international duty with the Wales under-21 squad for their friendly doubleheader in Albania.

Touray is an academy graduate of Newport County. He had his contract extended by the EFL club last week, keeping him at the club for a further year.

The young forward explained to the South Wales Argus the benefits of his loan move.

“I thought it was a league where I could get a bit of exposure and that’s what I’ve done this year.

“I was glad that I took the opportunity of going on loan and getting this experience, because it’s helped me a lot.

“I’ve learned a lot about football – how to be disciplined, the physicality, the technical side of it – there’s a lot of things that go into a football match.

“But with the experience I’ve got now, I hope I can take that back to Newport and improve my game again.”
