FA Women’s Championship side Lewes have signed Wales internationals Emma Jones and Rhian Cleverly.

Defender Cleverly joins from French side Le Havre, whilst Emma Jones joins from Cardiff City Ladies.

Jones joined in June, whilst Cleverly joined recently. Both had been long-term targets of manager Fran Alonso.

Cleverly’s move back to England could boost her chances for a return to the Wales setup whilst Emma Jones featured in Wales’ 1-0 victory over New Zealand in June.

The 24-year-old is the latest addition at the Pan and is the fourth Wales international to arrive in Sussex in the last two months.

She had been playing for French League Two side Le Havre, before spending three years in the United States with Hofstra University. Jones was also with Bristol City Women in the WSL2 in 2016.

Cleverly is able to play either as a centre-back or in central midfield.

Speaking to LewesFC.com, Cleverly said: “I’m delighted to have signed for Lewes. I love the values and ambition of the club.

“To play for a team that cares so much about the growth of women’s football is very important to me.

“After visiting and speaking to Fran it was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. I can’t wait to meet the girls and start preparing for a successful season.”

Jones was on target for Cardiff City Ladies nine times last season. The 24-year-old previously played for Linköpings in the Champions League.

She featured for Wales at Under-17 and Under-19 level, before breaking into the senior team this year.

“I’m really excited to be at Lewes. My main job is to score goals and that’s exactly what I intend to do,” said Jones to LewesFC.com after making the move to East Sussex.

There are now five Wales internationals at Lewes.

Emily Jones, Emma Jones, Ella Powell, Rhian Cleverly and Samantha Quayle make up a strong Welsh continent at the English second tier club.
