Wales: Slovakia qualifier could be played behind closed doors

The Euro 2021 qualifier between Wales and Slovakia could be played behind closed doors.

Wales take on Slovakia at the Anton Malatinsky Stadium in Trnava on October 10, which is in three weeks time.

Reports from Slovakia claim that the Slovakian FA will appeal a decision that could see them take on Wales in front of no spectators.

Wales defeated Slovakia in the reverse fixture at the Cardiff City Stadium in March, with Daniel James scoring his first goal for Ryan Giggs’ side.

The Dragons are currently fourth in qualifying and trail Slovakia by three points. Wales hold a game in hand over Croatia, Slovakia, and Hungary.

A statement from the Slovak Football Association reads: “The Slovak Football Association received from the UEFA Disciplinary Board for the behaviour of Slovak fans in the guest sector during the Hungary – Slovakia qualification match the order to play the next match, ie the qualifying match for the European Championship Slovakia vs Wales on October 10 at 20.45 in Trnava without spectators.

“SFZ also received a fine of EUR 20,000. However, this is a decision that the SFZ can appeal to and therefore will use all available legal means to allow the Slovak national football team to play an important match with Wales in front of the spectators.

“At the same time, the Slovak Football Association assures fans who have already purchased tickets for this match that they will not lose their money.

“As soon as this decision is final and the match Slovakia – Wales would eventually have to be played without spectators, the SFZ will inform about how the money is returned.”

A statement is expected to come from the Football Association of Wales in a number of days.
