Goalkeeper Adam Davies says he is excited to be a part of Wales’ EURO 2020 squad as they approach their opening match against Switzerland.

The 28-year-old, who plays his club football with Stoke City, is taking part in his first major tournament with Cymru after earning his first call up in October 2016.

Davies turned out 21 times for the Potters this season and has match experience in his locker, compared to Danny Ward and Wayne Hennessey, who found minutes hard to come by at their respective clubs.

Rinteln-born Davies did not feature in the two warm-up fixtures against Albania and France, but has made himself available should he be called upon.

“Whoever is called upon is ready to do the job and and we will be there supporting each other as much as possible

“Danny and Wayne have played the two previous friendlies but for myself personally I will be ready if I am called upon.”

Davies has two international caps to his name, firstly in a friendly victory over Trinidad & Tobago in 2019. He then was capped competitively for Wales in a win over Bulgaria in the UEFA Nations League.

He replaced Wayne Hennessey, who suffered an injury and was able to keep a clean sheet in a fifteen minute cameo.

“If you look at the Bulgaria game where I came on there for the last fifteen minutes, you have to come on and perform.

“Training has been really good competition between all three of us has been good, we are known for the goalkeepers union we stick together”

“You never know in football, it is a difficult one with goalkeepers there is only one place

Despite being third in line for an appearance against Switzerland, the prospect of just being at a major international tournament is a feeling of pride for Davies.

Back in 2016, he had just completed his second season with Barnsley, where he made a total of 49 appearances.

He won promotion to the Championship with the Tykes and will be hopeful of the same kind of glory with Wales this summer.

“I am super excited if you told me at the start of my career that I would be in this position I would have bitten your hand off.

“I’m just going to soak up every single minute of it, enjoy the atmosphere, enjoy the games and enjoy training with the lads day in and day out.

“This opportunity might not come around again for me, it is a proud moment for me and my family and I am really excited to get going.”
