Haverfordwest 0-0 Aberystwyth: Pennock saves penalty in goalless draw

A penalty save by Alex Pennock salvaged a point for Aberystwyth away to Haverfordwest County in a key clash in the relegation battle.

Haverfordwest dominated the possession stats, but their inability cost them dearly as they were forced to settle for a point against their relegation rivals.

Both sides had to make changes from the reverse fixture last week. Haverfordwest were without Jazz Richards, whilst Henry Jones was suspended after his red card in that fixture. Aberystwyth were without goalkeeper Gregor Zabret through illness, and Steff Davies was ruled out after he picked up an injury in the home game.

Chances were few and far between in the first half. The home side dominated possession, but a lack of a killer instict meant this did not translate to clear cut chances. Haverfordwest had chances from distance through Ben Fawcett, Ryan George and Kieran Lewis, but all of which failed to find the target.

Early in the second half, the best chance of the game fell to Haverfordwest’s Kieran Lewis. A free-kick by former Seasider Elliot Scotcher was half-cleared by Rhys Davies, and the ball fell to Lewis who saw his shot cannon off the crossbar.

Aberystwyth Town 2-0 Haverfordwest County: Victory moves Aber away from relegation

With the game stuck in a deadlock with twenty minutes left, the home side had a golden opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty. Alhagi Touray Sisay was tripped by Ben Wynne, and after keeping his balance to get a shot away, the referee pulled it back to award the spotkick.

With a number of potential takers, it was Danny Williams who was elected to take the kick, but his effort was well saved by Pennock to the goalkeeper’s right.

With fifteen minutes left of the game, neither side looked likely to find a breakthrough. Jordan Davies blasted a close range shot over the bar, whilst Jonathan Evans fired a stikre straight at Lee Idzi in stoppage time.

After this result, both sides stay in the same place in the table, with Aberystwyth in eighth place and Haverfordwest currently in 11th, four points from safety.
