Carmarthen Town staged a late comeback in stoppage time to beat Llantwit Major 2-1 at Lon Melin Wynt.

The Old Gold had trailed for much of the match thanks to Harri Edwards’ opener in the 19th minute, but an equaliser from Cameron Allen one minute from time gave Greg Walters the platform to snatch a late winner in the sixth minute of additional time.

Mark Aizlewood’s team dominated most of the second-half and their patience was rewarded with their two late goals in which the substitution of Allen was inspired one, as he helped to give them a winning start to the 2023/24 Cymru South season.

Llantwit started brightly and had early chances from Joel Woodington and Edwards. Woodington headed wide while Edwards put a shot over the bar.

The host’s kept up the pressure and Woodington won a penalty after he was sent into the box. As he went to goal past Idzi he was brought down and Edwards stepped up and fired past Idzi.

Carmarthen had a chance to level soon after but Jordan Vickers could only find the side netting after breaking into the box.

Woodington had another chance after a good ball from Danny Woolfenden but he again failed to hit the target.

Carmarthen almost levelled before the break as Liam Thomas was found in space in the box. He put his effort across goal but it went wide of the target.

Carmarthen came out in the second half and pushed Llantwit deep as they looked to get back into the game.

Keeper Lee Idzi sent a long ball right to the other end to Liam Thomas. Thomas was forced wide by Llantwit keeper Ryley Allen and from the angle Allen was able to save Thomas’ effort.

Carmarthen continued the pressure and Llantwit were struggling to keep clearing their lines. Mason Jones-Thomas and Jordan Langley both saw their shots blocked as the Llantwit defence threw their bodies in the way.

Liam Thomas was then denied again by Ryley Allen, who got down quickly to turn Thomas’ shot around the post.

A rare Llantwit attack saw Tom Tweedy head over from close range after a good cross from Matthew Kimmins.

Ryley Allen then stopped Liam Thomas’ point-blank header as it started to look like Llantwit would hold on.

It wasn’t to be however as Carmarthen pressure told when sub Allen hit a shot on the turn inside the box to level the game in the 89th minute.

Carmarthen weren’t content with just a point however, and deep into stoppage time earned themselves three. Walters fired his shot in and Allen helpless in stopping his powerful effort from landing into the top-hand corner.
