There has been a full set of fixtures in all three divisions of the Gwent County League Divisions, as Abertillery Bluebirds kept their place at the top of Division One with a stalemate against Ynysddu Welfare.
There were key results in the other divisions which kept Marshfield top of Division Two and Coed Eva Athletic at the top of Division Three.
We analyse this week’s action.
Division One
Abertillery Bluebirds 0-0 Ynysddu Welfare
Abertillery Bluebirds will be disappointed to have only drawn against Ynysddu Welfare given their start to the league campaign. The Bluebirds have lost just once so far, but Ynysddu themselves have had a great season so far.
After youth cup stories going viral, the Welfare have played just seven games, and have lost just once. But, they will be pleased to have secured a positive result away from home against the league leaders.
Cwmbran Town 3-3 Caerleon
Cwmbran Town have started the league season in fine form, and currently have the best goal difference in the league and this game shows us exactly why. The club are ruthless in front of goal, but they will be ruing their defence in this game, after they failed to pick up all three points despite scoring three times.
Owen Llewellyn, James Vernall and Kieron McConnachie’s goals were not enough, as Lewis Ford, Marc McKay and Jamie Davies struck to secure Caerleon a point.
Lliswerry 3-2 RTB Ebbw Vale
Lliswerry secured their fifth win in 10 league games to keep pace with the early chasing pack, thanks to a brace from Dale Cooke and a goal from former Carmarthen Town winger Kyle Bassett.
Charlie Davies and Iestyn Gwilliam responded for RTB, but it was Lliswerry who secured all three points.
Newport Civil Service 1-0 PILCS
PILCS’ early season struggles persisted this weekend as Newport Civil Service earned their fifth win of the season. The visitors have won just twice in 13 league games, but Civil Service will be hoping this win can help them keep up with the league’s top sides for the remainder of the season.
Villa Dino Christchurch 0-4 Abercarn United
Villa Dino Christchurch suffered their tenth loss of the league season with an emphatic 4-0 win for Abercarn this weekend.
Abercarn have won seven out of nine league games to start the year, and this win leaves them nine points off top with three games in hand over their opponents.
Wattsville 3-3 AC Pontymister
In this six goal thriller, neither side could find their way to the decisive goal to earn them victory.
The two sides have won a combined seven wins between them, and will have been keen for the victory, but it was most certainly a spectacle for the neutrals.
Division Two
Abertillery Excelsiors 4-0 Mathern
Abertillery kept up their positive start to the season with a 4-0 win over a Mathern sid, who have won just once this season.
The Excelsiors’ ninth win in 12 games leaves them just four points off top placed side Marshfield.
FC Tredegar 0-3 Lucas Cwmbran
An Alex Cooke brace helped Lucas Cwmbran to a victory over FC Tredegar. It was their fifth win of the season, and a goal from Arun Boswell helped Cwmbran to round off the win.
Machen 3-1 Clydach Wasps
Nigel Ballett scored a hat-trick against Clydach Wasps to fire Machen to three points in the league. Adam Carrington responded for the visitors, that keeps the visitors in the bottom half of the table.
Pentwynmawr Athletic 5-1 Rogerstone
Dan Suter’s hat-trick fired Pentwynmawr Athletic to a comfortable win over Rogerstone. Rogerstone were favourites heading into the game, but Pentwynmawr who had three wins before the game, came up trumps in the fixture.
Rhymney 2-2 Marshfield
Arran Elias and Dave Bradley’s goals were cancelled out by goals from Jamie Harris and Nicky Green as Rhymney and Marshfield played out a 2-2 draw.
Marshfield prop up the table with ten wins in 12, and will be disappointed not to have secured all three points.
Division Three
Coed Eva Athletic 4-0 Crickhowell
A brace each from Danny Davies and Dave Davies helped Coed Eva to an emphatic 4-0 win over Crickhowell.
The hosts ensured they were top of the league come the end of the weekend.
Nantyglo 2-3 Usk Town
Usk Town’s Harris scored a hat-trick to deny Nantyglo a victory in Gwent County League Division Three.
Adam Hughes scored a brace to keep the home side in the game, but Usk Town secured all three points.
Ponthir 2-0 Oak FC
Ponthir secured their maiden win of the 2018/19 league season with a 2-0 win over Oak FC on Saturday.
Oak had won four times in seven games before the game, but Ponthir secured a clean sheet and all three points to rise away from the bottom of the table.
Race 1-4 Cwmcarn Athletic
Goals from Joel Powell, Jordan Thomas and Luke Phasey were enough to hand Cwmcarn Athletic an away victory over Race.
Race have suffered their sixth defeat of the season that leaves them rock bottom with just a point.
Tranch 5-3 Cromwell Youth
Despite a brace from Luke Upham and a goal from Nazrul Islam, Cromwell Youth suffered a 5-3 defeat to Tranch in Gwent County League Division Three.
Tranch’s victory has helped them keep pace with league leaders Coed Eva Athletic, with the home side just three points behind the league leaders.
