A sparkling debut from Tom Fry inspired Dinas Powys to a 3-1 victory over Sully Sports in the first qualifying round of the Welsh Cup.

Fry along with Hugh Coles and an own goal from Best Lee had the home side 3-0 up before Ferna Kanda scored a consolation goal a minute from time. But the damage was done beforehand, and it’s Dinas who go into the pot for the next round.

With the teams separated by two tiers in the Welsh football pyramid, it’s no surprise that Dinas rushed out of the blocks.

There seemed to be a clear instruction from the management to press Sully as high as possible, and players such as Jacob Flower and Ryan Garland carried out the order tremendously well.

Chances came and went as a result of this. Luke Blatchford, Garland, and new signing Tom Fry all peppered the Sully goal, but a mixture of poor efforts and good saves from Antonis Oustagiannakis meant the scores were level for a while.

In the 36th minute however, Sully’s defence was finally breached. A corner whipped in from Fry was unfortunately turned into his own net by Best Lee to put the hosts one up, but in truth, it was a goal that had been coming all half.

The only stain on an otherwise great half by Dinas was a head injury sustained by striker Flower, who was forced off as a result.

The second half turned into a very scrappy affair.

In the early stages Sully did adopt an attacking philosophy. Although they didn’t create any clear-cut chances, they certainly weren’t giving this game up easily.

The vast majority of the half however was played in the middle of the park, with passes not quite coming off and shots from range the order of the day.

In the 76th minute though Dinas put the game beyond doubt.

Sully attempted to play out the back, but Abdelrahman Boulaiche robbed them of the ball inside the box. He squared it to Hugh Coles, and the youngster took his team and placed his shot perfectly, to put Dinas 2-0 up.

Debutant Fry then put the icing on the cake. Picking up a pass in the middle of the pitch, he paced forward and unleashed a vicious shot from around 25-yards, which sailed over the head of Oustagiannakis, to make it three for Dinas.

Sully did battle well and were rewarded a minute from time. A powerful run by Chris Rees into the area got them into a dangerous position. As he was pulled down, he managed to get a ball across to Feran Kanda, who slotted it into the bottom corner.
